“…The seeds were placed in trays containing cocopeat with neutral pH for sprouting (50 seeds for each treatment) with temperature and relative humidity maintained at 25 ± 2 °C and 60 ± 2% respectively in dark (Kim et al ., 2004). The seeds were sprayed with 6 mL distilled water for 5 days and then with elicitors (NaCl‐ 10, 50, 100, 150 m m ; Ascorbic acid‐ 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 m m ; Citric acid‐ 10, 50, 100, 150 m m ; Mannitol‐ 10, 50, 100, 150 m m and Control‐ distilled water, 6 mL each) for the next 2 days after every 6 h. The concentrations of elicitors for optimization were selected after an extensive literature review (Natella et al ., 2016; Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016; U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Food Additive Status List, 2018; Liu et al ., 2019; Castro et al ., 2021). All the elicitors were freshly prepared in distilled water before application and sprouting took a total of 7 days to obtain suitable biomass for analysis.…”

“…The biosynthesis of stress-inducible alkaloids is a natural adaptive response to abiotic and biotic stress factors [ 9 ]. In vitro stress caused by the action of elicitors is also often accompanied by increased biosynthesis of soluble sugars and phenolic compounds [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. Soluble carbohydrates are synthesised, for example, in response to osmotic stress, protecting cellular members and improving survival under stress conditions [ 29 ].…”
