ELF18‐INDUCED LONG NONCODING RNA 1 evicts fibrillarin from mediator subunit to enhance PATHOGENESIS‐RELATED GENE 1 (PR1) expression

Abstract: Summary Plant immune response is initiated upon the recognition of pathogen‐associated molecular patterns such as elf18. Previously, we identified an Arabidopsis ELF18‐INDUCED LONG NONCODING RNA 1 (ELENA1), as a positive transcriptional regulator of immune responsive genes. ELENA1 associated with Mediator subunit 19a (MED19a) to enhance enrichment of the complex on PATHOGENESIS‐RELATED GENE 1 (PR1) promoter. In vitro and in vivo RNA–protein interaction experiments showed that ELENA1 can also interact with FI… Show more

“…More recently, analysis of fib2 knockout plants demonstrated that FIB2 binds to and negatively regulates the expression of innate immune response genes in Arabidopsis. Upon Pseudomonas syringae inoculation, FIB2 interacts with ELF18-INDUCED LONG-NONCODING RNA1 (ELENA1) and is then evicted from gene promoters to activate innate immune response genes (Seo et al, 2018). Taken together, these findings suggest that FIB1 and FIB2 play distinct roles in the modification of and interaction with RNA, DNA, and/ or histone proteins in Arabidopsis.…”

“…Thus, here we describe a previously unappreciated function for plant CBs and the nucleolus in plant defence responses. Interestingly, another nucleolar (also found in CBs) protein, fibrillarin 2 also has been assumed to play an important role in plant defence by interacting with the RNA polymerase II transcription Mediator complex MED19a subunit controlling expression of PR-1 genes (B€ ackstr€ om et al, 2007;Seo et al, 2018;Soutourina, 2018).…”

“…Moreover, LncRNA39026 enhances tomato resistance to P. infestans by decoying miR168a and inducing PR genes' expression [71]. lncRNA directly binds to protein mediator as a molecular decoy of FIBRILLARIN 2 (FIB2) to regulate gene transcription of ELF18-induced long noncoding RNA1 (ELENA1) regulating PR1 in Arabidopsis [72]. After Bgt and Pst infection in wheat, 101 lncRNAs were predicted to be the target of miRNA using psRNATarget, including miR156, miR160, miR164, miR167, miR393, miR398, miR829, and so on.…”

“…The ELF18-INDUCED LONG-NONCODING RNA1 (ELENA1), as a factor enhancing resistance against Pseudomonas syringe pv. tomato DC3000, directly interacts with FIB2 and mediator subunit 19a (FIB2/MED19a) and affects the enrichment of MED19a on the PR1 promoter [41,72]. Overexpressing lncRNA LAIR was proven to increase grain yield and regulate the neighboring gene cluster's expression in rice [14].…”
