Elements of Designing Upholstered Furniture Sandwich Frames Using Finite Element Method

Abstract: This paper presents an approach to the design of an upholstered furniture frame using the finite element method and empirical studies. Three-dimensional discrete models of upholstered furniture frames were developed taking into account orthotropic properties of solid pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) without and with details strengthening their structure in the form of glue joints and upholstery staples. Using the CAE Autodesk Inventor Nastran finite element method, linear static analyses were performed by simul… Show more

“…Li [85] used the evaluation grid method in Miryoku engineering to guide straw furniture design research and practice. Matwiej [86] used the finite element method and empirical research to design the framework of soft cushion furniture and developed a 3D discrete model of the soft cushion furniture frame. The emphasis and adaptability of different research methods for research topics are different and have their own limitations.…”

“…Some studies evaluated strength properties of dowel-joined sofa frames (Kasal 2006), load-bearing capacity of L-shaped furniture self-locking frame connections (Gric et al 2017), and connections modeled as objects made of polylactic acid (PLA) (Kryzniak et al 2020). Several studies focused on the analysis of furniture products made of wood (Tankut et al 2014), the strength of corner dowel-shaped joints (Ke et al 2016), chair tests (Laemlaksakul 2008;Hu et al 2019;Diler et al 2023), the table joint test (Seker and Koc 2023), furniture frames (Colakoglu and Apay 2012), screw connection design (Hu et al 2023), furniture sandwich frames (Matwiej et al 2022), sofa tests (Kuskun et al 2020), honeycomb furniture panels (Smardzewski and Tokarczyk 2024), and wooden sandwich panels with auxetic core for furniture, including experimental and numerical analysis (Zhong et al 2023). Smardzewski and Ożarska (2005) created a mathematical model of a semi-flexibly connected wood screw and a numerical model of the cabinet furniture structure using the same materials.…”

“…The FEM is widely used in evaluating the mechanical properties of tools, for example, LiDai in 2007 used the FEM to study the structural mechanics of sofa frames [6] ; Ali KASAL in 2010 used the FEM to determine the strength of various sofa frames [7] ; Jerzy SMARDZEWSKI in 2013 used the nite element method to study the structure of upholstered furniture with All joint stiffness was studied [8] ; Lorraine CHENG in 2019 used SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION to analyze the mechanical properties of deformed furniture structures by nite element method [9] . Therefore, the FEM can theoretically analyze the experiments under ideal circumstances, and its scienti c validity has been recognized by a wide range of scholars.…”
