Abstract. The paper describes experimental study results for three kinds of enhanced surfaces (smooth surface, plain minifin surface and minifin surface with sintered perforated foil) and for two kinds of boiling fluids (ethyl alcohol and Novec TM 649). Novec 649 is considered to be an environmentally friendly alternative for electronic devices cooling applications. The experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure. Compared with smooth surface, the surface with plain minifins provides approximately 1.5-times higher heat transfer coefficient obtained with Novec TM 649 and ethyl alcohol boiling. At low and medium heat fluxes minifins with porous covering produced the highest heat transfer coefficient.

Professor Arthur E Bergles has made major contributions in a number ofareas in heat transfer. This article presents a review of300 papers published by him, and with his students and co-workers. through December 1996. Professor Bergles' research work can be broadlv categorized into seven areas: (I) enhanced heat transfer.(2) two-phase flow and heat transfer.(3) heat transfer 10 refrigerants (boiling and condensation). (4) cooling of electronic components, (5) laminar internal flow, (6) review and general articles, and (7) history of heat transfer. This research. conducted over more than 30 years, has produced a wealth of high-quality experimental data, theoretical models, and practical applications. One of the major objectives of this article is 10 highlight these contributions and identify their sources, to facilitate future researchers and designers in developing new theoretical models and in designing industrial equipment. The present article presents a comprehensive survey of his research work."The list of references is in a slightly different format.
