Although the opportunities and challenges facing each country may differ regarding science education research and practice, there are certainly commonalities, shared interests, and so on that suggest it would be of mutual benefit for different countries to exchange and share their experiences. Toward this end, a recently published book edited by Chiu (2015a, b) not only reports the successes and achievements, but also examines and articulates the existing and emerging opportunities and challenges for science education in Taiwan. While each chapter of the edited volume presents the progress of science education in Taiwan from a different perspective, a closer examination and reflection of these collective efforts and activities point to the emergence of a set of experiences that worthwhile to share with science education scholars, researchers, and policymakers from other Asian countries and the rest of the world. Based on the "Taiwan Experience," it appears that in spite of the complexity of the political and socioeconomic backdrop in Asia, promising opportunities exist at the individual, regional, and global levels for science educators to improve the quality of science education research, to increase the effectiveness of science teaching and learning at school, and to reach out and educate a wider audience in a range of informal settings. The edited volume by Chiu (2015b) documents the emergence of the "Taiwan Experience" and lays the groundwork for a similar phenomenon happening in other fields and in other regions of the world. The implications for science education in Asia and beyond are discussed in detail.While there are a few articles describing science education research and practice in Taiwan (Chiu 2007;Chiu and Chen 2012;Tsai and Wu 2010), a recent book edited by the second author of this chapter provides a more comprehensive review

Guru profesional harus mampu mengemban peran ganda sebagai praktisi sekaligus sebagai peneliti. Sebagai peneliti, guru dituntut untuk mampu memperbaiki mutu pembelajaran melalui penelitian tindakan kelas guna menyelesaikan permasalahan yang terjadi di kelas. Meskipun demikian, masih banyak guru yang belum mampu melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas dengan benar. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini merupakan kegiatan pelatihan penelitian tindakan kelas bagi guru SMP Kota Pematang Siantar. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dan pengetahuan guru SMP Kota Pematang Siantar dalam menghasilkan laporan penelitian tindakan kelas. Pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan prinsip heutagogy dan praktik langsung. Kegiatan dilakukan di SMP Negeri 1 Kota Pematang Siantar pada tanggal 17-22 Januari 2022. Kegiatan diikuti oleh 30 orang guru SMP Kota Pematang Siantar yang sedang mengusulkan kenaikan pangkat TMT April 2022. Kegiatan pengabdian dilakukan melalui tahapan persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Pada tahap persiapan dilakukan pre-test dan dilanjutkan dengan penyampaian materi terkait konsep dasar penelitian tindakan kelas. Tahap pelaksanaan dilakukan pendampingan kepada guru dalam menyusun laporan PTK berdasarkan proposal yang telah disusun guru sebagai penugasan mandiri. Dan pada tahap evaluasi dilakukan post-test untuk mengukur kemampuan dan pengetahuan guru setelah mengikuti pelatihan. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 28 laporan yang dihasilkan dari 30 orang peserta sebagai output pelatihan. Selain itu terlihat adanya peningkatan rataan skor yang diperoleh dari hasil pre-test dan post-test. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat melalui pelatihan PTK memberikan hasil yang positif terhadap peningkatan kompetensi guru SMP Kota Pematang Siantar dalam melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas.

The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine the design of competency-based sustainable professional development training management model to improve competence and culture of researching SMP teachers in Pematangsiantar City; (2) determine the effectiveness of the competency-based sustainable professional development training management model to improve competence and culture of researching SMP teachers in Pematangsiantar City. This research is a development research with ADDIE model. The subjects of this research population were all SMP City Pematangsiantar teachers totaling 1,094 people and the sample subjects of this study were SMP City Pematangsiantar teachers totaling 80 people where the sample was determined by purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interviews, documentation, questionnaires and tests. The results of the research are: (1) The competency-based sustainable professional development training management model to improve competence and culture of researching junior high school teachers in Pematangsiantar City was developed using the ADDIE model which includes analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation; (2) The competency-based continuous professional development training management model is very effective in improving teacher competence and research culture.
