Liquid marbles allow for quantities of various liquids to be encapsulated by hydrophobic particles, thus ensuring isolation from the external environment. The unique properties provided by this soft solid has allowed for use in a wide array of different applications. Liquid marbles do however have certain drawbacks, with lifetime and robustness often being limited. Within this review, particle characteristics that impact liquid marble stability are critically discussed, in addition to other factors, such as internal and external environments, that can be engineered to achieve a robust long-lived liquid marble. New emerging applications, which will benefit from this improvement, are explored such as unconventional computing, cell mimicry, and soft lithography. Incorporation of liquid marbles and liquid crystal technologies shows promise in utilizing structural color for optical display applications, and within green and environmental applications, liquid marble technology is increasingly adapted for use in energy conversion, heavy metal recovery, CO 2 capture, and oil removal.

Controllable Positive/Negative Phototaxis of Millimeter-Sized Objects with Sensing Function

Phototaxis, which is the directional motion toward or away from light, is common in nature and inspires development of artificial light-steered active objects. Most of the light-steered objects developed so far exhibit either positive or negative phototaxis, and there are few examples of research on objects that exhibit both positive and negative phototaxis. Herein, small objects showing both positive and negative phototaxis on the water surface upon near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, with the direction controlled by the position of light irradiation, are reported. The millimeter-sized tetrahedral liquid marble containing gelled water coated by one polymer plate with light-to-heat photothermal characteristic, which adsorbs onto the bottom of the liquid marble, and three polymer plates with highly transparent characteristic, which adsorb onto the upper part of the liquid marble, is utilized as a model small object. Light irradiation on the front side of the object induces negative phototaxis and that on the other side induces positive phototaxis, and the motion can be controlled to 360° arbitrary direction by precise control of the light irradiation position. Thermographic studies confirm that the motions are realized through Marangoni flow generated around the liquid marble, which is induced by position-selective NIR light irradiation. The object can move centimeter distances, and numerical analysis indicates that average velocity and acceleration are approximately 12 mm/s and 71 mm/s2, respectively, which are independent of the direction of motions. The generated force is estimated to be approximately 0.4 μN based on Newton’s equation. Furthermore, functional cargo can be loaded into the inner phase of the small objects, which can be delivered and released on demand and endows them with environmental sensing ability.

Segmentation of Urea Melt Marbles and Application of One-Shot Segmentation in Batch Production of Large Urea Granules

Steel strip granulation is a promising technology for preparing large urea granules; however, easy blocking of the feeding nozzle by urea melt limits its industrial applications. In this study, a dust-free and anticlogging urea granulation process for the mass production of large urea granules is proposed by introducing a urea melt marble (UMM) formed by covering urea melt with super-urea-phobic poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) particles to improve steel strip granulation. Large urea granules are obtained by directly cutting a large-sized cake-shaped mother-UMM into segments. These segments shrink into spherical baby-UMMs and solidify after condensation to form rigid particles. The results confirm that the PTFE powder distribution density for constructing a stable mother-UMM by the segmentation process is crucial. The PTFE powder distribution density for obtaining usable baby-UMMs and subsequent qualified large urea granules should be within 0.0009–0.0011 g/cm2. Super-urea-phobic honeycomb-shaped cutters are used for the batch preparation of qualified urea products with adequate quality distribution. This study provides a promising strategy for improving the production of urea granules.
