Elemental Carbon-Based Method for Monitoring Occupational Exposures to Particulate Diesel Exhaust

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Diesel exhaust has been classified a probable human carcinogen, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that employers reduce workers' exposures. Because diesel exhaust is a chemically complex mixture containing thousands of compounds, some measure of exposure must be selected. Previously used methods involving gravimetry or anaiysis of the soluble organic fraction of diesel soot lack adequate sensitivity and selectivity for low-level determination of par… Show more

“…15 chemical species (Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Pb) were consistently observed to be present. The quartz filters were sectioned with one half analyzed by the ThermalOptical Transmittance (TOT) technique using the NIOSH-5040 method (Birch and Cary, 1996) to determine EC and OC concentrations (Sunset Lab, Hillsborough, NC). The other half was frozen and preserved.…”

“…One punch (area: 1.5 cm 2 ) cut from each quartz fibre filter was analysed by TOT (Thermal-Optical Transmittance) method (Birch and Cary 1996) to quantify elemental and organic carbon. Five sub-fractions of OC were identified during the analysis: OC1, OC2, OC3, OC4 and PC (pyrolytic carbon).…”

“…OC and EC were measured by thermal-optical transmittance in a Sunset Laboratory Carbon Analyzer (Birch and Cary, 1996). Briefly, air is purged from the analyzer after a 1-cm 2 punch of sampled QFF is loaded.…”
