Electrospun polycaprolactone nanofibrous membranes loaded with baicalin for antibacterial wound dressing

Abstract: Due to the rise in bacterial resistance, the antibacterial extractions from Chinese herbs have been used more frequently for wound care. In this work, baicalin, an extraction from the Chinese herb Scutellaria baicalensis, was utilized as the antibacterial component in the poly(ε-caprolactone)/MXene (PCL/Ti3C2TX) hybrid nanofibrous membranes for wound dressing. The results revealed that the presence of Ti3C2TX aided in the diameter reduction of the electrospun nanofibers. The PCL hybrid membrane containing 3 wt… Show more

“…It is interesting to observe that with the increase of incorporation of neem extract, the fiber diameters are increased. These results are less or higher than the results of other literature and in almost all cases in nanofibrous membranes the fiber diameters are more than 100 nm [ 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ] (see Figures 9 , 10 , 11 ).
Figure 7 SEM analysis of the developed nanomembrane sample with 0% neem at different resolutions (a) 50 μm, (b) 30 μm, (c) 20 μm, and (d) 10 μm.

“…6a) due to the low conductivity of the PCL, which will produce a small net charge on the droplet surface. 34 Therefore, for meeting application requirements such as in bone grafts, PCL blended nanofibers were fabricated with increasing the flow rate to 30–35 μL m −1 .…”

“…As previously reported, the additives of small molecules that have multiple hydroxyl groups in the electrospinning of PCL affects the NF diameters by decreasing viscosity of solutions. 55,56 After the CHI-GA coating, the average diameters slightly increased to 563.1 ± 308.2 nm (Figure 2l). It also showed no significance (p > 0.5) in diameters of NFs between two groups, but the slight increase in the diameter was due to the formation of CHI-GA layers on CK/PCL NFs.…”
