Electrospun PLGA Membrane Incorporated With andrographolide-loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Sustained Antibacterial Wound Dressing

Abstract: Aim: To assess the wound-healing ability of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanofibrous wound dressing incorporated with andrographolide (Andro)-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). Materials & methods: PLGA/Andro-MSNs nanofibrous membrane wound dressings were produced by electrospinning. The effects of MSNs on the hydrophilicity, degradation and mechanical strength of membranes were evaluated. The cumulative release of Andro in vitro was obtained. Cell culture and in vivo tests on infectiou… Show more

“…Physicochemical properties of the Ag-Si/Al 2 O 3 sorbents presented on Table 2 were calculated by Rachkovskaya et al [41]. It can be seen that the proportion of loaded content of Ag present in the sorbent quantified by optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) from this study, where sample content is 0.01% Ag with the exception of sorbent Ag-Si/Al 2 O 3 -2 (0.003% Ag), the content of Ag in samples is related to its antimicrobial activity [14][15][16]. In the case of the particle sizes was assessed by screen size gradation (0.1-1 mm) [41], being an important parameter for water absorption, due to a reported relationship between the increment of particle size decreases mechanical parameters and increases water absorption [60], the sorbents from this work possess high particle size expecting adequate ability for water uptake.…”

“…Apart from BC and PC, other products such as hydrogels, poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), and 3D living constructs are being studied for their effectiveness in wound healing [ 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 ]. In current era, 3D bioprinting gaining much attention as other available biomaterial due to its ability to design cell components in microarchitecture.…”

“…A study done by Jia et al demonstrated that the integration of andrographolide-MSN enhanced hydrophilicity, increased mechanical strength, optimum porosity and pH, possessed strong antibacterial properties and enhanced epidermal cell adhesion and growth. This modification thereby stimulates the rapid wound healing in the in vivo testing [ 100 ].…”

“…Like lipid-based NPs, polymeric NPs might also affect drugs' pharmacokinetics in wound environments, thus enabling us to explore potential off-label uses of current drugs. Jia et al (2018) developed nanofibrous PLGA incorporating andrographolideloaded mesoporous silica NPs. Their results showed that the sustained releasing of andrographolide, which is extracted from a Chinese herb, surprisingly reduced inflammation intensity while promoting epidermal cells adhesion.…”
