Electrospun Hybrid Nanofibers Based on Chitosan or N‐Carboxyethylchitosan and Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract: Hybrid nanofibers from chitosan or N-carboxyethylchitosan (CECh) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by electrospinning using HCOOH as a solvent. AgNPs were synthesized in situ in the spinning solution. HCOOH slowed down the cross-linking of the polysaccharides with GA enabling the reactive electrospinning in the presence of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). EDX analyses showed that AgNPs are uniformly dispersed in the nanofibers. Since AgNPs hampered the cross-linking of chitosan and CECh with GA in the … Show more

“…The existence of Ag-O bond in the composite ultrafine fibers led to the tight combination between Ag and chitosan. Penchev et al [92] prepared Hybrid nanofibers from chitosan or CECS, AgNPs and PEO by electrospinning using formic acid as solvent. AgNPs were synthesized in situ in the spinning solution.…”

“…So, hybrid materials that were based on CS with other antibacterial materials have attracted much attention during the last few years. For instance, the combination of inorganic agents Ag, Zn, SiO 2 , TiO 2 has been reported [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Among them, chitosan-Ag nanoparticle composite had significantly high antibacterial activity with the presence of a small content (2.15%, w/w) of Ag NPs in the composite [5].…”

“…Composites with enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability may be prepared using a mixed polymer matrix derived from the polysaccharide, pullulan, along with PVA and SN [148]. The resistance of composite chitosan/PEG/SN fibers, whose enhanced bactericidal activity is imparted by chitosan and SN (photoactive TiO 2 may also be introduced into the composite [149]), to the action of aqueous media may be considerably enhanced upon cross-linking with glutaraldehyde [150]. Spectral studies of these composites indicated a different type of interaction between the SN and organic components of these systems due to the presence of various functional groups.…”
