Electrospinning polypropylene with an amino acid as a strategy to bind the antimicrobial peptide Cys-LC-LL-37

Abstract: Hospital isolation gowns are increasingly competitive, with brands and manufacturers contesting consumer preferences. The textile materials in contact with the skin can acquire secretions and multiresistant microorganisms, causing discomfort and health risks, respectively. A new nanofibrous substratepolypropylene grafted with L-Cys-was developed with an increased crystallinity, providing its surface with-SH hooks necessary to efficiently cross-link the antimicrobial peptide Cys-LC-LL-37 in order to protect aga… Show more

“…The surfaces coated AMA are reported to be effective in deactivating/killing microorganisms and preventing the formation of biolms. The active moieties which impart the biocidal qualities include metal and metal oxides, 75,[84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95] quaternary ammonium or phosphonium groups, [96][97][98][99][100] antimicrobial polymers, [101][102][103][104][105][106][107] N-halamine compounds, [108][109][110][111][112] antimicrobial peptides, 105 and natural compounds, 82,[113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121] as depicted in Fig. 6.…”

“…Natural host defence peptides (HDPs) are part of our innate immune system, which deactivates a broad spectrum of pathogens, playing a vital role in the host response system. Biocidal cationic polymers inspired by HDPs are biocompatible, 105 do not possess cytotoxicity and ecotoxicity, 170 and has excellent applicability in antimicrobial surfaces. 171 An antimicrobial nanofibrous substrate was prepared by grafting l -cysteine onto PP, followed by electrospinning to form fibres and cross-linked by Cys-LC-LL-37.…”

“…This is highly desirable for applications including functional and protective face masks as it is possible to introduce antimicrobial or antivirus molecules to the surface of the masks. 10,54 We took advantage of this unique character and chemically grafted polymer brushes with antimicrobial capability. 38 Our approach is based on the surface-initiated photopolymerization from the ultrathin hybrid coating.…”

“…Another important feature of the GO-PD hybrid coating is the capability for further chemical functionalization based on the abundant functional amine and catechol groups on PD. This is highly desirable for applications including functional and protective face masks as it is possible to introduce antimicrobial or antivirus molecules to the surface of the masks. , We took advantage of this unique character and chemically grafted polymer brushes with antimicrobial capability …”
