“…The difficulty in determining the ERC transfer functions parameters results from the fact that the clutch operation is unstable, and the measurements of the torque M are unique. The ERC operation instability is mainly caused by the following factors: the occurrence of leakage current and electric breakdowns in the fluid, the randomness of solid particles forming spatial structures (Jun and Lamei, 2018; Mikkelsen et al, 2017) the strong dependence of the fluid’s properties on temperature changes (Kęsy et al, 2022) as well as changes in the ER fluid’s humidity, and the wear of the ER fluid (Ziabska et al, 2017). Moreover, the instability of the ERC is strongly influenced by the operation of the brushes transferring the voltage to the slip rings located on the input shaft.…”

“…During the selection of the ER fluid, it is taken into consideration that the torque transferred by ERC is dependent on two factors: plastic viscosity m p of the ER fluid and the angular velocity Dv. The latter depends on the yield stress t 0 of the ER fluid, which is a function of the voltage producing the electric fiel (Ke ˛sy et al, 2022). Due to the fact that ERC is controlled by changing the voltage U, it is necessary to select a fluid for which the ratio of the second to the first torque component shall be as large as possible, that is, the t 0 /m 0 ratio is also as large as possible.…”

“…Due to high sensitivity (millisecond response), low energy consumption, simple structure, and low price of ER fluids, ER devices can facilitate the realization of mechanical-electrical conversion, such as the performance optimization of shock absorbers, clutches, and dampers (Kamelreiter et al, 2012;Kesy, et al, 2022b). Papadopoulos designed and manufactured multi-disc ER brakes or clutches.…”
