Electronic Tabletop Holographic Display: Design, Implementation, and Evaluation

Abstract: Most of the previously-tried prototype systems of digital holographic display are of front viewing flat panel-type systems having narrow viewing angle, which do not meet expectations towards holographic displays having more volumetric and realistic 3-dimensional image rendering capability. We have developed a tabletop holographic display system which is capable of 360° rendering of volumetric color hologram moving image, looking much like a real object. Multiple viewers around the display can see the image and… Show more

“…Tabletop holographic display is a device that allows the viewer to observe 3D hologram contents created from various angles with multiple cameras and view them anywhere from 360 degrees [14][15][16]. The system allows multiple viewers to view digital hologram images in the horizontal 360-degree direction by using digital micromirror device (DMD) capable of high-speed operation as a spatial light modulator (SLM).…”

“…Looking Glass Portrait in 2018 provides a full-color holographic display solution with 7.9" display volume, up to 100 views and 58° viewing cone. Jinwoong Kim et al get deep into electronic tabletop holographic display from 2017, and produced their demonstration device with SLM module and eye-tracking camera 10 . Besides, negative refraction slab lens is also welcome 11 , especially by commercial solutions in China and Japan.…”

“…FOR PEER REVIEW 7 of 14 became redder when they were viewed from the left side and more cyan when they were viewed from the right side. The generation of 3D color image using MEMS SLMs has been proposed by numerous research groups [15,21,26]. There are two techniques that can be used to generate 3D color images: the time-multiplexing technique using a single MEMS SLM and the space-multiplexing technique using three MEMS SLMs.…”
