Electronic Energy Levels in the Trivalent Lanthanide Aquo Ions. I. Pr3+, Nd3+, Pm3+, Sm3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, and Tm3+

Abstract: The free-ion energy-level schemes of the Pr3+, Nd3+, Pm3+, Sm3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ aquo ions have been determined from their absorption spectra in dilute acid solution at 25°. Energy-level assignments were made by comparison with crystal spectra, and on the basis of correlations between calculated and observed band intensities. For most of the ions, it was possible to identify several transitions giving rise to bands at energies as high as 45 000–50 000 cm−1. Sufficient numbers of assignments were mad… Show more

“…The three V u parameters (u =2, 4 and 6) were obtained by fitting with a least- Table 1 Assignments and oscillator strengths P for the f f transitions in the absorption spectra of the 19ZnO-80TeO 2 squares method the electric dipole contributions of the experimental oscillator strengths of the observed transitions to the calculated ones. The matrix elements given by Carnall et al [18] were employed in the calculation and the value n= 2.08 was used for the refractive index [19]. Magnetic dipole contributions were subtracted from the observed oscillator strengths using the procedure described elsewhere [20].…”
