Electronic Cigarettes and Asthma: What Do We Know So Far?

Abstract: Electronic cigarettes (EC) are a novel product, marketed as an alternative to tobacco cigarette. Its effects on human health have not been investigated widely yet, especially in specific populations such as patients with asthma. With this review, we use the existing literature in order to answer four crucial questions concerning: (1) ECs’ role in the pathogenesis of asthma; (2) ECs’ effects on lung function and airway inflammation in patients with asthma; (3) ECs’ effects on asthma clinical characteristics in … Show more

“…55 In 2019, 33% of the youth with asthma who reported having an asthma attack in the previous year were exposed to SHS to e-cigarettes. 54 Overall, the evidence contributes to a growing understanding about the timing of SHS exposure and the development of childhood asthma, showing that knowledge of critical time windows of exposure is important in implementing targeted interventions.…”

“…Although the number of studies on the short‐ and long‐term health effects of e‐cigarettes is very limited, recent studies suggested that exposure to e‐cigarettes is also a significant factor that has been shown to increase the incidence of asthma 55 . In 2019, 33% of the youth with asthma who reported having an asthma attack in the previous year were exposed to SHS to e‐cigarettes 54 …”

“…Furthermore, smoking is linked with increased hospitalizations in asthmatic patients and asthma-related deaths [ 66 ]. Furthermore, there is scant evidence that electronic cigarette use and second-hand exposure to their aerosols may also amplify symptoms and increase exacerbations in asthma patients [ 79 , 80 , 81 ].…”

“… 4 - 6 Emerging evidence also shows that electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use may worsen asthma symptoms. 7 Marijuana (MJ) is another apparent popular substance among adults. While the health effects of MJ use on asthma remain controversial among clinicians, 8 its use can cause an asthma attack leading to hospitalization and even death.…”
