Electron Spin Resonance of Tl++ Centres in KCl Crystals

Abstract: Thallium-doped KCl crystals are X-rayed a t 77 OK. They are warmed up to 300 O K and then cooled down again to 77 OK. ESR signals showing a resolved hyperfine structure due to six chlorines are observed. These arise from a TI++ ion on a cation lattice site. The con-

“…Some of the OA bands observed in the spectra of the cubic nsl-centers have been described [25,75 to 771 with the molecular model, extensively employed for describing the EPR spectra [25,78,791. The molecular model assumes that the [MX,] cluster with 0, symmetry formed by the nsl-ionlatom and the six NN halogen ions (in alkali halides) is responsible for the observed properties.…”

“…The EPR of TP+ was subsequently observed in irradiated KC1:TI (Dreybrodt and Silber 1967), but the EPR of TI0 has not yet been reported. We have carried out magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements on KCI :T1 after x-irradiation at 77 K; our results are consistent with the presence of both TI0 and T12+ in the crystals, and enable us to give level assignments to some of the optical transitions.…”
