“…They have been separated by digestion and micromanipulation from the rest of the cell and with the electronmicroscope sometimes appear to be sharply separated from cell cytoplasm. It is doubtful whether, in molluscum, the virus particles develop from the trabeculae of the inclusion matrix, as has been suggested by Melnick et al (25). The histochemical studies of Rake & Blank (120) on sections of molluscum bodies indicated the presence of ribonucleic acid in early inclusions which was compressed by increasing amounts of deoxyribonucleic acid in more mature bodies, a finding which confirms results obtained by microspectrographic methods [Hyden (121)].…”

“…Excellent reviews of the techniques used, the results obtained, and the difficulties of interpretation have recently been published [Williams (17); Bang (18)]. The pox viruses examined in dried films are variola (19,20), canary pox (21,22), fowlpox (23,24), molluscum (21,23,25), ectromelia (21,23), myxoma (21,26), and fibroma (27). In such preparations all the viruses examined reveal brick-shaped bodies mostly within the size range 250 to 35 0 ffij.lX200 to 250 mj.l.…”

“…Crystal-like formations have been observed by differential centrifugation of material from human infectious skin papilloma (17,18) as well as in sections of ceils of this lesion (1,19). The intranuclear inclusion bodies of some such cells have been found to contain DNA (20,21) which is acquired during a developmental stage of the inclusion (22,23).…”

“…It has been observed electron microscopically in thin-sectioned material by Banfield, Bunting, Strauss & Melnick (1951, and Melnick, Bunting, Banfield, Strauss & Gaylord (1952), but their use of formalin fixation and removal of the methacrylate embedding material from their sections are unsatisfactory for the preservation of fine structural detail. Gaylord & Melnick (1953), using more acceptable techniques, also observed the virus, but their published observations were rather cursory and intended only for comparison with their more informative examination of the vaccinia and ectromelia viruses.…”
