“…The present study has also shown that the collagen fibril content of the rat liver is 1.3mg/g of wet tissue, which is about 10% of that of the human liver. This coincides with TEM studies by other authors that small mammals like bats contain fewer collagen fibrils than those of the monkey and human (ITO and SHIBASAKI, 1968;TANUMA and ITO, 1978). Although it seems reasonable to say that as the bodies of the vertebrates become larger, the collagen fibril contents become greater, no systematic study is available so far concerning this view.…”

“…These findings seem to support the hypothesis that Ito cells are responsible for producing collagen fibrils or procollagen. Indeed, evidence has accumulated that Ito cells produce collagen either in normal livers (WOOD, 1963;SCHNACK, STOCKINGER and WEWALKA, 1967;ITO and SHIBASAKI, 1968;ITO, 1973;TANIKAWA, 1975), in fibrotic livers induced by CCI, (MC GEE and PATRICK, 1972;KENT et al, 1976;YOKOI et al, 1985), or under cultured condition (DE LEEUW et al, 1984). However, the possibility exists that in either the normal or injured liver, several cell types, including hepatocytes, may participate in the elaboration of collagen.…”

“…The Ito cells were located in the perisinusoidal space or in the wide perisinusoidal space between the hepatocytes designated as the recessus by ITO and SHIBASAKI (1968) (Fig. 2, 3).…”

“…The single cilium of fat-storing cells in the human liver was first reported by ITO and SHIBASAKI (1968) and later by many authors in other vertebrates (WAKE, 1971;YAMA-MOTO and ENZAN, 1975;TANUMA and ITO,1978;TANUMA et al, 1981;OHATA et al, 1982aOHATA et al, , 1984DE LEEUW et al, 1984). Its axonemal structure, however, has not been demonstrated because it is rarely encountered under the electron microscope.…”
