Electroflocculation for textile wastewater treatment

Abstract: -This work reports on the viability of the electroflocculation (EF) process for chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity and color removal from a raw effluent originated from a particular textile industry related to hemp manufacture. Firstly, the following operational parameters were optimized: current density; initial pH; electrolysis time; material of the electrode (iron, aluminum or iron-aluminum); and interelectrode distance. Additionally, the effects of these parameters on specific electrical energy consum… Show more

“…Processes for electrochemical treatment of effluents have been described in the literature since 1903. In recent years interest has been growing, especially because of its simplicity of operation and application to treat various types of effluents from various sectors, such as domestic sewage [27], laundries [29], restaurants [30] steel mills [31], textile mills [32], and tanneries [33], facilitating the removal of metal ions [28], fluoride ion [34], boron [35] and oils [7,[36][37][38][39][40][41].…”

“…Outra característica é a mudança constante do corante utilizado no processo produtivo, o que por consequência modifica as características químicas e físicas do efluente gerado, alterando a concentração da demanda química de oxigênio (DQO) e pH (CERQUEIRA et al, 2009). Nesse sentido, Kunz et al (2002) (1) geração de pequenas bolhas de gás;…”

“…Considering this problem, there is a constant concern for the development of techniques able to remove pigmentation that has not adhered to the tissue fibers during the process steps, and is released together with the liquid waste of such industries (Araujo et al, 2011;Souza et al, 2011;Cerqueira et al, 2009). Technologies of traditional wastewater treatment proved ineffective for the treatment of effluents containing synthetic textile dyes because of the chemical stability of these pollutants (Forgacs et al, 2004).…”
