Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes for Sustainable Development

Abstract: Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) is a kind of technology that integrates solvent and salt dissociation. It can realize salt conversion without second salt pollution or provide H+ and OH-/alkoxide ions in situ without salt introduction. Thus, it inherently possesses economical and environmental benefits. Moreover, its technological compatibility gives rise to new functions when it couples with other technologies, such as complexion, ion exchange, extraction, and adsorption. In view of the above pec… Show more

“…Forth, a salt bridge is employed in this study to spatially separate the cathodic and anodic chambers. In real application, a membrane (17,18) that is commercially available can be employed. Anyway, this new process is promising as an alternative FGD process that immobilizes the SO 2 waste in the form of non-calcium product by means of a cheap and non-toxic material, and thereby avoids the concern over any secondary pollution (30).…”

“…The electrochemical cleanup of flue gas has already been tested. For example, SO 2 can be anodically oxidized to H 2 SO 4 in aqueous solution (14)(15)(16), and regeneration of FGD agents is developed by using electrodialysis with a bipolar membrane (17,18). It should be noted that as air coexists with the SO 2 in flue gas, electrochemical utilization of the molecular oxygen from air to further oxide the SO 2 is indispensable and should be encouraged.…”

“…Another electrochemical technique, Electrodialysis, has been successfully employed for different purposes [5][6][7][8][9][10] such as desalting brackish water [11][12][13], purifying solutions in food industry [14], or producing acids and alkalis from industrial streams [15]. In this work, electrodialysis (ED) is proposed to be the technique employed for reducing conductivity by removing ions from almond industry wastewater.…”

“…Los procesos de electro diálisis presentan un amplio espectro de aplicación desde la industria de alimentos, de reciclaje hasta la generación de energía [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] . Estos procesos se basan en el transporte másico selectivo de iones a través de membranas de intercambio iónico bajo la acción de un campo eléc-trico externo.…”
