Electrochromic Properties of Sol-Gel Synthesized Macroporous Tungsten Oxide Films Doped with Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract: Macroporous tungsten oxide thin films were prepared by using a polystyrene microsphere template and the peroxitungstic acid precursor. Gold nanoparticles were introduced into the tungsten oxide film by two different methods, either in the polystyrene template, through a self-assembly process, or they were cast on the surface of the annealed film. Raman imaging experiments showed an enhancement effect of the intensity of the major tungsten oxide bands by the gold nanoislands. The electrochromic properties of go… Show more

“…However, they attributed this high result to the presence of the Au nanoparticles in the WO 3 IO lm. 31 Wei Cheng et al reported CE values of around 21 cm 2 C À1 for mesoporous WO 3 prepared from WCl 6 by a sol-gel method. 32 Also, the present CE result of 40 cm 2 C À1 exceeds the 25 cm 2 C À1 of a pulsed laser deposited WO 3 lm, 33 while for sputtered lms CE is 34 cm 2 C À1 .…”

“…Compared with the switching time of 11.7 and 14.6 s for coloring and bleaching, respectively, of bare WO 3 , those were 7.2 and 2.2 s for 5% Fe-doped WO 3 . WO 3 films doped with C [ 134 ], N [ 135 ], P [ 136 ], Ni [ 126 , 137 ], Mo [ 138 , 139 ], Co [ 140 ], Sb [ 141 ], Ag [ 142 ], Au [ 143 ], Gd [ 144 ], Tb [ 145 ], SiO 2 [ 146 ], TiO 2 [ 147 ], V 2 O 5 [ 148 ], etc., have been reported before. Their positive effects on WO 3 EC films are summarized in Figure 10 .…”

“…A lot of methods have been reported for preparing nanostructured tungsten oxide as an electroactive layer in electrochromic devices, including electrochemical anodization [9,10], sol-gel method [11,12], sputtering technique [13][14][15], and hydrothermal reaction [16][17][18]. Among which the solvothermal synthesis [19,20] as a facile, efficient, and inexpensive approach gains more and more attentions.…”
