In this work, electrodialysis has been proved to be a suitable technique for decreasing the conductivity of a real wastewater from an almond industry, which has been previously treated by electrocoagulation (EC) and electrooxidation (EO). A seven-cell electrodialyzer, with total active membrane area of 1400 cm 2 , was employed and several parameters, as the limiting current density, were determined. A method for measuring voltage across the membranes was developed, in order to control membrane fouling. The method consisted of capillaries inserted into the solution compartments and connected to a high impedance voltmeter. A study of the reuse of the concentrate solution was made, and it was stated that it can be concentrated ten times. The treatment of the wastewater was performed at different voltages (7-16 V) to reach values of conductivity of the diluate of 0.5 mS cm -1 . After that, the scaling up to a pre-industrial scale was performed by using a seventy-cell electrodialyzer, with total active membrane area of 3.5 m 2 . The process was performed by applying voltages of 20-70 V and a final conductivity of the diluate of 0.5 mS cm -1 was achieved. The electric energy consumption was calculated in every case.2

RESUMOA utilização de tratamentos eletroquímicos como recurso tecnológico alternativo para o tratamento de efluentes industriais tem atraído considerável atenção, apresentando características vantajosas como facilidade de automação, alta eficiência e versatilidade em menor tempo de tratamento, além de requerer menor espaço físico para suas instalações. A diminuição do uso de produtos químicos para o tratamento, uma vez que o elétron é o principal reagente no processo, e a possibilidade de reaproveitamento de coprodutos gerados também se configuram em importantes oportunidades dentro do atual cenário global de sustentabilidade e energia. Essas tecnologias comportam ainda o uso de fontes renováveis de energia. Um coproduto catódico de grande interesse ambiental e econômico é o hidrogênio, potencialmente coletado e armazenado.Nesse contexto, os materiais são de importância fundamental, pois a eficiência e sustentabilidade dos processos eletroquímicos dependem da utilização de materiais com propriedades como baixa impedância eletroquímica e elevada resistência à corrosão, além de elevada atividade para a oxidação dos compostos de interesse, em especial os materiais selecionados para as etapas anódicas.O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar, em linhas gerais, um dos trabalhos desenvolvidos no Labcorr voltados para o tratamento eletroquímico de efluentes industriais visando a remoção de N-NH 3 e DQO. Técnicas eletroquímicas foram utilizadas para a seleção dos materiais usados como anodos e catodos. Configurações para utilização de NaOCl como oxidante indireto no processo foram avaliadas. Os resultados mostraram que um reator de placas paralelas com anodos DSA e catodos de aço carbono e injeções de NaOCl ao início do tratamento e em ponto intermediário do processo foram efetivos na remoção dos compostos desejados, indicando ainda boa oportunidade para o reaproveitamento de produtos como nitrito e hidrogênio, o primeiro como inibidor de corrosão e o segundo podendo ser utilizado como fonte de energia para alimentar o próprio sistema de tratamento de forma semiautônoma.Palavras-chave: tratamento eletroquímico, eletrodos DSA, aço carbono, hidrogênio. ABSTRACTThe electrochemical treatment as an alternative technological resource for the treatment of industrial effluents has attracted considerable attention through the last years because of important characteristics such as easy automation, high efficiency and versatility in a short period of time besides requiring less physical space for its units. As the electron is the main "reagent" in an electrochemical process, the use of chemicals is reduced. This and the possibility of using coproducts generated during the electrochemical treatment processes configure relevant opportunities in the actual global energy and sustainability scenario. These technologies may include the use of renewable energy sources such as Hydrogen, a cathodic coproduct of great ambiental and economical interest that could be obtained and stored.

“…In this context, over the past years, several works have focused on the use of renewable energy power sources to decrease both the investment and maintenance costs of wastewater treatment systems. Among research studies on the electrodialysis of brackish water [17][18][19], the electrocoagulation of dyes [20], and the electrooxidation of wastewater [21][22][23][24][25][26] in which an electrochemical cell is directly supplied by photovoltaic solar energy have demonstrated the technical feasibility of the technology. The direct connection of the photovoltaic array to the electrochemical reactor avoids the use of a storage battery system, and this clearly contributes to efficient use of the energy (no energy losses in charge-discharge cycles of batteries) and to a decrease in the investment and maintenance costs of storage systems.…”
