Electrochemical synthesis of multi-armed CuO nanoparticles and their remarkable bactericidal potential against waterborne bacteria

Their structure, morphology, size and compositions were characterized by SEM, EDX and XRD. The NPs demonstrated strong bactericidal potential against Bacillus anthracis cells and endospores. PS2 killed 92.17% of 4.5 × 104 CFU/mL B. anthracis cells within 1 h at a dose of 1 mg/mL. Whereas P5 showed a higher efficacy by killing 99.92% of 7 × 105 CFU/mL B. anthracis cells within 30 min at a dose of 0.5 mg/mL and 99.6% of 1.25 × 104 CFU/mL B. anthracis cells within 5 min at a dose of 2 mg/mL. More than 99% of spores were killed within 8 h with 2 mg/mL PS2 in LB media.

The antibacterial activity of various nanoparticles is gaining increasing interest due to its potential medical applications. In this work, we presented the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles prepared by chemical reduction from aqueous solutions of copper sulfate (CuSO 4) with sodium borohydride (NaBH 4) and hydrazine hydrate (N 2 H 4) as reductant and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizer. The X-ray diffraction spectra showed the formation of tenorite (CuO) and cuprite (Cu 2 O) nanoparticles when different ratios of CuSO 4 /NaBH 4 and CuSO 4 /N 2 H 4 were used. Photographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed agglomerates of grains with a narrow size distribution (from 20 to 70 nm), whereas the radii of the individual particles were between 2 and 20 nm. Smaller nanoparticles and narrower particle size distributions were obtained when NaBH 4 was used. The results of antibacterial activity using the Kirby-Bauer method showed that nanoparticles obtained with NaBH 4 presented a reasonable bactericidal activity. Pseudomonas aureginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were more susceptible to the particle size than Escherichia coli. In addition, with small amounts of Cu 2 O in samples of CuO nanoparticles, the antibacterial susceptibility against Pseudomonas aureginosa was improved. Finally, nanoparticles of CuO incorporated into cotton by applying ultrasound waves remained impregnated after five washes.

Electrochemical synthesis of transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) and related oxides is highly appealing, as it affords nanomaterials with high purity and dimensional control by properly setting only few experimental parameters. The resurgence of electrochemical routes to NPs can be traced back to seminal works by the Reetz's group, about 25 years ago. Despite many advantages, this method has intrinsic limitations, mainly related to the use of organic solvents, which may limit real-life applications of the as-prepared NPs. Therefore, an important current issue in the electrosynthesis of these systems regards the preparation of aqueous and long-lived colloids. In this Review, we provide an overview of the most promising electrosyntheses of colloidal nanomaterials; real-life applications of electrochemically produced NPs will also be commented on.
