Electrochemical Stability of Fluorine Doped Tin Oxide (FTO) Coating at Different pH Conditions

Abstract: Fluorine doped tin oxide coated glass slides were evaluated for their chemical stability in different pH solutions at room temperature by carrying out potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The FTO was more stable in 0.1 M HNO 3 and 0.1 M NaCl solutions under both anodic and cathodic polarization conditions. Cathodic polarization in 0.1 M HCl solution resulted in a reduction of SnO 2 to lower valent species. The semiconductivity of FTO, which was n-type at low anodic potentials, was p-type a… Show more

“…To facilitate a better understanding of the resistive switching process, band diagrams with respect to LRS (under forward bias) and HRS (reverse bias) states were projected. The bottom electrode FTO offers its n-type nature due to the fact that fluorine-doped in tin oxide results in the generation of free electrons and oxygen vacancies [32], [33]. On the other hand, CuCrO 2 was observed to have p-type nature (confirmed through Hall measurements and hot probe technique).…”

“…Among others, Geiger et al reported dissolution of SnO 2 under acidic, reductive conditions according to SnO 2 + H + + 2e − → Sn 2+ + 2H 2 O (+0.07 V vs. SHE), leading to increasing ohmic losses, thus decreased conductivity. 63,64 ICP-MS analysis confirmed trace amounts of dissolved tin in the electrolyte after 2.5 days of electrolysis. We assume that H 2 O diffuses through the mesoporous TiO 2structure, favouring reductive Sn-dissolution over time.…”

“…The information on flat band potential, along with the band gap energy of the passive film, and charge carrier density, can be used to estimate the stability of the passive film under anodic or cathodic polarization conditions [42]. The energy level of the conduction band minimum (CBM) of the passive film can be calculated based on the flat band potential [43]. The energy level of the CBM determines the energetics of water reduction reaction which is one of the cathodic reactions of stainless steel corrosion.…”
