Polyhydrazyls in the Cyanobenzene Series, 1111). -New Bishydrazyls with Amino Substituents"")In 6-chloro-2,4-bis(N',N'-dipheiiylhydrazino)benzene-l,3,5-tricarbonitri~e (5) and in the analogous 6-fluoro compound 6 the halogen atom can be substituted by amines. 6 is more reactive than 5 ; thus 5 reacts only with the nucleophilic secondary amines ethylenimine and piperidine or the more nucleophilic azide and phthalimide ions to give the bishydrazines 7-10, while 6 also reacts with the primary amines aniline and tert-butyl amine or with ammonia, and the dihydrazino compounds 11 -13 are formed. The dihydrazinoaniline 13 can also be prepared by reduction of the azide 7 or by hydrazinolysis of the phthalimide 8. Thermolysis of 7 in the presence of cyclohexene or triphenylphosphine gives the bishydrazines 14 or 15 with evolution of nitrogen. Photodecomposition of 7 in acetonitrile leads to 13 and t o the aminophenylenebis(dip1ienylhydrazyl) 22. Oxidation of the bishydrazines 7-15 with lead dioxide gives the bishydrazyls 16-24. The properties of these stable free radicals are described.
