Electrochemical, Electrochemiluminescent and Photoelectrochemical Immunosensors for Procalcitonin Detection: A review

Abstract: Procalcitonin (PCT) is a promising biomarker for identification of the origin and severity of sepsis, which is a deadly body infection. With the aim of early diagnostics of PCT, various PCT analytical technologies have been designed and applied all over the world. Electrochemistry-based immunosensors have attracted wide attention due to their low-cost, simplicity, sensitivity and simultaneous sensing performance, which can transduce the immunoreaction into detectable signal on functionalized solid surface. Thi… Show more

“…Though, IL-6 is also reported as a biomarker for sepsis, procalcitonin is reported as more specific as compared to other markers for the early detection of sepsis ( Jin and Khan, 2010 ). PCT has been reported to be detected using various sensing systems like electrochemical, electro-chemiluminescent and photoelectrochemical immunosensors, as a major biomarker for sepsis ( La, 2020 ).…”

“…In early clinical diagnosis, it can be used as an anti-inflammatory marker for severe infectious diseases, multiple organ failure and sepsis. 26,27 Under normal circum-stances, intracellular calcitonin lysis keeps the serum PCT concentration below 0.1 ng mL −1 . After bacterial invasion, the level of PCT rises rapidly, which can cause infectious diseases and sepsis.…”

“…Electrochemical methods with high sensitivity, selective, rapid response and portability have recently become burgeoning and powerful analytical methods. [19][20][21] The sensitivity of electrochemical sensor is mostly related to the choice of electrode materials. Thus, the researchers are focused on electrode modication and have studied a lot of materials for the electrochemical detection of biomaterials.…”
