Electrocatalytic properties of {Mo3S4}-based complexes with regard to the hydrogen evolution reaction and application to PEM water electrolysis

Abstract: We report on the synthesis and the electrochemical characterization of two [Mo3S4]4+ nanoclusters, [Mo3S4(acacbut)3]Cl and [Mo3S4–Pd(acacbut)3]Cl.

“…In contrast, in the presence of the {Mo 3 S 4 }‐based anion [{(PW 11 O 39 )Mo 3 S 4 (H 2 O) 3 (μ‐OH)} 2 ] 8− , the polarization curve exhibits a noticeable increase of the cathodic current that occurs from about −0.15 V vs. RHE. Similar behavior was also observed with the POM‐free {Mo 3 S 4 } cluster although the cathodic current was significantly lower than those observed with the ThioPOM catalyst [17] . Actually, such qualitative experiments appear fully consistent with our previous reported results and demonstrate that the synergistic electrocatalytic HER effect arising from the covalent linkage between polyoxotungstate ions and {Mo 3 S 4 } cluster can be generalizable to various POM‐Mo 3 S 4 combinations [14] …”

“…hydrogen and oxygen electrodes. However, the same cell is observed to undergo hydrogen evolution [18] and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) at the said electrodes respectively when supplied with water and energy as mentioned earlier. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) uses a water-based, acidic polymer membrane as its electrolyte.…”

“…In the quest for HER electrocatalysts sufficiently active and stable in acid electrolytes in PEMWE, encouraging results have been obtained with thiomolybdate compounds (molybdenum is a hundred times more abundant in the Earth crust than Pt). 1448 MoS 2 nanocrystallites were found active towards the hydrogen dissociation reaction in the 1980s (in the field of Hydrodesulphurisation in the oil & gas industry). Molybdenum sulphur-based catalysts were also found active for the reverse hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and over the last years, for hydrogen formation in electro- or photo-catalysis HER processes.…”
