Electrical resistivity tomography for studying liquefaction induced by the May 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake (Mw = 6.1, northern Italy)

Abstract: Abstract. This work shows the result of an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey carried out for imaging and characterizing the shallow subsurface affected by the coseismic effects of the Mw = 6.1 Emilia-Romagna (northern Italy) earthquake that occurred on 20 May 2012. The most characteristic coseismic effects were ground failure, lateral spreading and liquefaction that occurred extensively along the paleo-Reno River in the urban areas of San Carlo and Mirabello (southwestern portion of Ferrara Provin… Show more

“…1a, 2a, 3a) and 'n' numbers of depth levels (overlapping data levels). To obtain two-dimensional resistivity images of the subsurface, apparent resistivity data were inverted using RES2DINV software (Loke and Barker 1996;Revil et al 2008;Galli et al 2014;Giocoli et al 2014). Electrical images show a root mean-squared (RMS) error of 6% for ERT1 and 6.3% for ERT2, after three iterations.…”

“…Thanks to the diverse range of now mature exploration methodologies, applied geophysics holds a great potential for the collection of spatially distributed data that can be both combined with each other and with data derived from direct surveys. Geophysical methods have been applied in environmental and engineering studies with the aim to locate and characterize near-surface geological structures (Caputo et al 2003;Giocoli et al 2007;Galli et al 2017), aquifers (Vereecken et al 2006), landfills (Konstantaki et al 2015), landslides (Jongmans and Garambois 2007;Perrone et al 2014), liquefaction phenomena (Giocoli et al 2014), to investigate site for building foundations (Soupios et al 2007), to locate underground excavations (Kova cevi c et al 2013), to evaluate earthquake hazard and to support seismic microzonation studies (Boncio et al 2011;Gallipoli et al 2011;Mucciarelli et al 2011;Vignola et al 2018).…”
