Electric field analysis of 132kv EPDM insulator and correlation with ageing features

Abstract: Abstract-A COMSOL multiphysics electric field analysis of an ethylene-propylene rubber (EPDM) insulator is presented. The 132kV insulator is an inverted post insulator that is taken from a jumper loop. It has been in service in a severely polluted environment for eight years. The insulator's surfaces are asymmetrically aged with organic dark deposits covering the insulator's surface, and with additional surface markings. The insulator has a manufacturing artifact, known as the mold line, which forms an elongat… Show more

“…Unbalanced field distribution along the creepage length can exaggerate and ultimately degrade and damage insulator surfaces as a result of partial discharges on the surface which usually take place before surface flashover [26]. A remote reading AC field meter EMF-A152 and a spherical probe EMF-A182 were used for the measurement of the E-field distribution for each insulator slab in both acidic and normal cold fog conditions.…”

“…Electric field calculation along an outdoor insulator is considered to be one of the most reliable diagnostic tools. Experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out previously to locate defects in outdoor insulators using electric field calculations [28,29]. In this paper, various contamination and dry band conditions were considered to calculate the electric field distribution along the surface of the silicone rubber insulator.…”

“…The study of electric field distribution along polymeric insulators is very important for understanding the discharge mechanism and pollution flashover. Moreover, electric field study gives an indication of the possible damage and service life of insulator under contaminated conditions [14,15]. Electric field measurement could also be used as a diagnostic tool to detect invisible defects in polymer insulators.…”
