Electra IRP voltage control strategy for enhancing power system stability in future grid architectures

Abstract: This study is intended to show the future voltage control strategy designed in the framework of the ELECTRA Integrated Research Programme (IRP) project for the web-of-cells (WoC) concept. This scheme, called post-primary voltage control, aims to keep the node voltages at any time within the bands defined by the regulations and to minimise the power losses in the system by calculating the optimal voltage set-points for the different nodes. The reactive power will mainly be used to restore the voltages but also … Show more

“…As outlined in the introduction ELECTRA IRP targets a cell-based control approach (i.e., WoC) where various observable and control functions are being developed [6]. Within the scope of the project, the concept of the PPVC voltage control has been proposed [22]. The main idea under investigation is the possibility of defining "Cells" within a distribution network, each with its own PPVC controller that works independently.…”

“…The 15-minutes cycle is selected as it represents a time window length tradeoff between the computational cost and accuracy of the forecasts. This optimal updating of set points continues unless unscheduled event occurs in the network [9].…”

“…The PPVC [19] restores the voltages in the nodes of the cell to the set point values while minimizing the power losses in the cell. It ensures the balance between reactive power flow optimization and robust voltage set-points (within a tolerance band) that do not trigger a new set-point calculation continuously if the set-points are close to the safe band limits.…”

“…As the PVC is an automatic control with no real involvement of the cell operator, this paper is dedicated to the visualization and control of the PPVC resources done by the cell operator from the control room. The PPVC [19] restores the voltages in the nodes of the cell to the set point values while minimizing the power losses in the cell. It ensures the balance between reactive power flow optimization and robust voltage set-points (within a tolerance band) that do not trigger a new setpoint calculation continuously if the set-points are close to the safe band limits.…”
