Elasticity solution for a sandwich plate having composite facesheets with in-plane grading

Abstract: A convergent series solution based on the theory of elasticity is presented for bending of a sandwich plate strip with an isotropic homogeneous core and composite orthotropic facesheets with variable fibre volume fraction in the in-plane direction. The accuracy of first-order shear deformation theory is assessed against this benchmark solution. Further, it is shown that the benefit of using functionally graded material facesheets depends critically on the span-to-thickness ratio of the plate.

“…Using a similar approach, Ravindran and Bhaskar [41] developed a 3D analytical approach for flexural analysis of IPFG simply-supported plates subjected to sinusoidal loading. They extended this approach further [42] for flexural analysis of simply-supported isotropic sandwich plates integrated with in-plane graded composite face sheets. Zhang et al [43] have employed the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) to obtain a 3D semi-analytical solution for the flexural investigation of in-plane functionally graded (IPFG) isotropic rectangular plates.…”
