Elasticity mapping of murine abdominal organsin vivousing harmonic motion imaging (HMI)

Abstract: Recently, ultrasonic imaging of soft tissue mechanics has been increasingly studied to image otherwise undetectable pathologies. However, many underlying mechanisms of tissue stiffening remain unknown, requiring small animal studies and adapted elasticity mapping techniques. Harmonic motion imaging (HMI) assesses tissue viscoelasticity by inducing localized oscillation from a periodic acoustic radiation force. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of HMI for in vivo elasticity mapping of … Show more

“…High-resolution ultrasonography has been used to quantify 2D mapping of solid stress induced deformation in tissue 29 , and this method was expanded to monitoring deformation in biopsy cores, providing regional quantification of solid stress and extending to in-vivo clinical application. Additional ultrasonography measurement techniques to quantify tissue stiffness include harmonic motion imaging (HMI) 30 , model-based ultrasonic elastography imaging 31 , and ultrasound shear-wave elastography 32 . These techniques either quantify bulk estimations of stress or regional elasticity of tissue, however, the essential parallel between internal stress and pathological features are often ignored in macroscopic type studies.…”

“…Few elastography studies have been performed in the pancreas, mostly with ultrasound elastography. Increased stiffness values related to fibrosis and inflammation have been reported with ultrasound elastography in chronic and acute pancreatitis in clinical studies and in one mice study 11 , 38 . Such findings have not yet been reported with MR elastography but the feasibility and reproducibility for pancreatic MR elastography were reported in patients 10 , 39 , 40 .…”

“…Most importantly, the degrees of stiffening (from 2 to 5 kPa) were relevant to the mechanics of many normal and diseased tissues. [59][60][61][62]…”
