Abstract.The first beam of post-accelerated radioactive ions was realized in 1989 at the Louvainla-Neuve research facility. The method employed two coupled cyclotrons to produce, separate and re-accelerate the species of interest. Several technological challenges were solved in the process, to obtain pure and intense beams for use in nuclear physics research. Similarly, new techniques were developed and refined for the measurement of the nuclear reactions induced by the radioactive beams. The available energy range made the facility particularly suited for nuclear astrophysics studies, and important results were obtained in the determination of stellar reaction rates using beams of 7 Be, 13 N, 18 F, 18,19 Ne. A beam of 6 He ions was extensively used in studies of the nuclear structure (halos, molecular states) and dynamics (the reaction process at energies around the potential barrier).

An exclusive measurement of the breakup of 7 Li incident on a proton target was performed at 38.1 MeV (5.44 MeV/nucleon), probing the direct part of the excitation to the continuum. The two cluster constituents of 7 Li, 4 He, and 3 H, were recorded in coincidence in the MAGNEX spectrometer and a silicon detector respectively. Both detection systems were set at forward angles and the measurement of both kinematical solutions allowed the determination of a breakup angular distribution over a wide angular range in the center-of-mass frame. Comprehensive simulations provided the detection efficiency of the system and via the appropriate kinematics the transformation of the cross sections from the laboratory to the center-of-mass reference frame. The experimental results are analyzed and discussed together with previous elastic scattering data using the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) framework and are found to be in satisfactory agreement. It was found that while the breakup cross section was dominated by the nonresonant component, the most important influence on the elastic scattering was due to coupling to the 7/2 − resonance of 7 Li.

B8+Al27 scattering at low energies

We present 8 B+ 27 Al elastic scattering angular distributions for the proton-halo nucleus 8 B at two energies above the Coulomb barrier, namely E lab = 15.3 MeV and 21.7 MeV. The experiments have been performed in the Radioactive Ion Beams in Brasil facility (RIBRAS) in São Paulo, and in the TwinSol facility at the University of Notre Dame, USA. The angular distributions were measured in the angular range of 15-80 degrees. Optical model and Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels calculations have been performed and the total reaction cross sections have been derived. A comparison of the 8 B+ 27 Al total reaction cross sections with similar systems including exotic, weakly and tightly bound projectiles impinging on the same target is presented.
