Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, hygiene behaviors such as keeping distance, avoid-ing masses, wearing face masks and adhering to hand hygiene recommendations became impera-tive. The current study aims to determine factors interrelating with hygiene behaviors. Methods: 4,049 individuals (1,305 male, 2,709 female, aged 18-80 years) were recruited from rehabilitation clinics or freely on the internet and surveyed via online questionnaire between May 2020 and August 2021. Socio-demographics, hygiene behaviors, emotions (fear), life-satisfaction, risk factors and disability as well as communication were assessed. Results: Prevalence for hygiene behaviors was: keeping the distance 84.9%, avoiding mass gatherings 84.6%, wearing face masks 96.5% and hand hygiene 80.7%. Hygiene behaviors were significantly related to fear with linear and quad-ratic associations. Conclusion: Individuals with disabilities, risk factors and psychological symp-toms are more compliant. Especially hand hygiene should be targeted to achieve higher compli-ance rates. A medium level of fear is more functional than too elevated fear. Behavioral interven-tions and targeted communication aiming at improving different behaviors in orchestration can help individuals to remain healthy and maintain a high life-satisfaction. Thereby, communication in the healthcare setting is imperative and all involved individuals should become more aware of this to ensure high hygiene standards and patient safety.

Background Loneliness, or perceived social isolation, is prevalent in both the general population and clinical practice. Although loneliness has repeatedly been associated with mental and physical health, research on interventions that reduce loneliness effectively is still rather scarce. Objective This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a guided and an unguided version of the same internet-based cognitive behavioral self-help program for loneliness (SOLUS-D) for adults. Methods A total of 250 participants will be randomly assigned to 1 of 2 intervention groups (SOLUS-D with guidance or SOLUS-D without guidance) or a wait-list control group (2:2:1 allocation ratio). Adult participants experiencing high levels of loneliness will be recruited from the general population. Individuals currently experiencing at least moderately severe depressive symptoms, an ongoing severe substance use disorder, previous or current bipolar or psychotic disorder, or acute suicidality will be excluded from the trial. Assessments will take place at baseline, 5 weeks (midassessment), and 10 weeks (postassessment). The primary outcome is loneliness assessed using the 9-item University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale at the posttreatment time point. Secondary outcomes include depressive symptoms, symptoms of social anxiety, satisfaction with life, social network size, and variables assessing cognitive bias and social behavior. The maintenance of potentially achieved gains will be assessed and compared at 6 and 12 months after randomization in the 2 active conditions. Potential moderators and mediators will be tested exploratorily. Data will be analyzed on an intention-to-treat basis. Results Recruitment and data collection started in May 2021 and are expected to be completed by 2022, with the 12-month follow-up to be completed by 2023. As of the time of submission of the manuscript, 134 participants were randomized. Conclusions This 3-arm randomized controlled trial will add to the existing research on the efficacy of loneliness interventions. Furthermore, it will shed light on the role of human guidance in internet-based treatments for individuals with increased levels of loneliness and the possible mechanisms of change. If SOLUS-D proves effective, it could provide a low-threshold, cost-efficient method of helping and supporting individuals with increased levels of loneliness. ZusammenfassungInden vergangenen Jahren hat das Thema Einsamkeit an Raum im wissenschaftlichen und politischen Diskurs gewonnen. So gibt es inzwischen zahlreiche Forschungsarbeiten und Publikationen zu Einsamkeit im Alter, die auch in der öffentlichen und politischen Diskussion besonders wahrgenommen werden. Empirische Befunde sollen diese Wahrnehmung unterstützen. Anhand von Daten des Sozioökonomischen Panels (SOEP) aus dem Jahr 2016 unterstreicht der Dritte Teilhabebericht der Bundesregierung, dass sich 16 % der Befragten oft einsam fühlen, unter den Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen sind es sogar 31 %. Seit der Corona-Pandemie wird aufgrund der angeordneten Regelungen zum Social Distancing eine Häufung von Einsamkeitserfahrungen festgestellt. Eine Studie des wissenschaftlichen Dienstes der EU-Kommission kam zu dem Ergebnis, dass 25 % der EU-Bürger:innen sich nach den ersten Monaten der Pandemie einsam fühlten (im Vergleich zu 12 % im Jahr 2016. Regelmäßige Befragung zu Familie, Erwerbsarbeit, Politik und u. a. Gesundheit mit ca. 15.000 teilnehmenden Haushalten bzw. 30.000 Personen.). In nordeuropäischen Ländern hat sich der Anteil der einsamen Menschen seit Beginn der Pandemie sogar vervierfacht. Nach und nach etabliert sich dabei die Erkenntnis, dass Einsamkeit auch unter jungen Menschen kein seltenes Phänomen ist, das aber in dieser Altersgruppe in der Pandemie überdurchschnittlich an Bedeutung gewinnt. Dieser Beitrag analysiert Einsamkeitserfahrungen junger Menschen insbesondere anhand der Forschungsergebnisse aus den Studien JuCo I–III zu der Lebenssituation und den Erfahrungen von Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen während der Corona-Pandemie und diskutiert abschließend, welcher Forschungsbedarf sich daraus ableiten lässt.
