Ein zahngrößen- und gesichtsbreitenbezogener Zahnbogenindex

Abstract: Taking as its starting point the often postulated criticism of Pont's Index, the intent of the study was to develop a diagnostic procedure which took into consideration the objection that the Pont Index doesn't take the shape of the patient's skull into consideration. On the basis of the data obtained from the models and anthropological measurements of 50 adult subjects with fairly eugnathic dentition, the first step was to follow Pont and study which skull size exhibited the highest correlation to the posteri… Show more

“…A weak correlation was found between the bizygomatic width and both anterior and posterior arch widths. This finding was not consistent with that reported by some researchers [24], where they found a strong correlation between the zygomatic arch width and posterior dental arch width of maxilla. Their analysis was based on the data obtained from the models and anthropological measurements of 50 adult German subjects with fairly eugnathic dentition, and their dental arch widths showed a perfect correlation with Pont's Indices.…”

“…Some professionals support the application of Pont's index for the prediction of arch widths, 7,8 while others believe that its use should be avoided because of inherent inaccuracies. 1,9,11,20,[23][24][25][26] Pont suggested that the reliability of the index should be tested in other populations. Additional studies have supported his proposed procedure for arch width predictions, 8,24 whereas others have questioned the reliability of Pont's index for clinical purposes.…”

“…[ 17 18 19 ] While others believe that it should not be used for the prediction of arch dimensions. [ 2 6 7 8 9 20 ] As Pont's index is the average ratio hence it could not be used as a true predictor of the arch width for each individual. Thus mechanical arch development may not be steered by Pont's index.…”
