Eight emitters clogging characteristics and its suitability under on-site reclaimed water drip irrigation

Abstract: Drip irrigation is the most effective and reliable method for reclaimed water irrigation. The water usually contains a lot of suspended particles, metal salt ions, organisms and microbial communities, which will enhance the possibility of emitter clogging or more complex clogging mechanism. Emitter clogging has become one of the key problems to the application and popularization of the drip irrigation technology. In this paper, we selected four kinds of pressure-compensating emitters and four kinds of non-pres… Show more

“…Finally, the emitter clogging and biofilms growth represented some differences among the head, middle and end parts of the laterals. The clogging degree, average biofilms thickness (S d ) and DWs showed the order as "head < middle < end", which was identical to previous studying results (Pei et al 2014). On the other hand, the biofilms components increased with higher irrigation frequency, which meant that high-frequency irrigation increased the risk of emitter clogging.…”

“…Two 120 mesh disk filters were installed in line at the head of the drip irrigation system, and the emitter outflows were controlled by maintaining constant working pressure. The detailed instruction of the system was introduced by Pei et al (2014). The drip irrigation system in the first year, with an automatic irrigation controller, operated from July 5, 2010, to November 16, 2010.…”

“…Analysis of the relationship of Dra and CU revealed a significant linear correlation (Figure ). By comparing this result with the study for reclaimed water drip irrigation (Pei et al ., ), it could be found that under the same Dra, the CU of emitters for saline water drip irrigation was less those for reclaimed water drip irrigation. It indicated that in the saline water drip irrigation system it was more difficult to maintain high CU values after emitters became blocked.…”
