As an important parameter of drip irrigation using saline water, irrigation frequency not only affects crop growth by changing the soil moisture–salinity distribution, but also influences the anti‐clogging performance of the drip irrigation system by changing fouling growth inside emitters. Hence, a representative medium‐salt‐tolerant crop of processing tomatoes was selected as the research object. The effects of different drip irrigation frequencies (S1 (1‐day irrigation interval), S2 (2‐day irrigation interval) and S3 (4‐day irrigation interval)) on the clogging characteristics of emitters were analysed via a 2‐year drip irrigation experiment using saline water between 2013 and 2014. The results showed that the discharge ratio variation (Dra) and the Christiansen uniformity coefficient (CU) of the emitters decreased as the irrigation interval increased, while there was a negative linear correlation between Dra and the irrigation interval (R2 > 0.79). The highest Dra and CU values of 80.9 and 78.0% were observed in high‐frequency irrigation (S1) after 2 years of planting. Moreover, clogging fouling inside the emitter accumulated gradually and exhibited a significant positive linear correlation with irrigation interval time (R2 > 0.80). The chemical components of clogging fouling, which were calcium magnesium carbonates, quartz, silicates, and sodium chloride, were the same under different irrigation frequencies. The emitter clogging of drip irrigation systems using saline water for processing tomato production in the Hetao irrigation area presented a composite clogging (mainly chemical clogging associated with physical clogging). Considering previous research, a high frequency of once per day is recommended for drip irrigation using saline water. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is increasingly being adopted to improve water security internationally. However, clogging during MAR remains one of the greatest challenges for sustainable operations. This study examines the effects of iron on biological clogging processes using column experiments and suggests management options. The results indicated that the presence of iron limits the transport of bacteria through the column, and that concentrations <10 mg/L are correlated with increased bacterial growth. Conversely, the increased viscosity of biofilm subsequently limits the transport of iron through the column. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that large iron-Pseudomonas sp. flocs formed which occupied the sand pore spaces. The effect of iron induced chemical clogging was most notable in the initial stage of the experiment while bio-clogging dominated later. There are many recommended values of iron concentration in water recharge, most of them are advised from the point of pollution perspective. Based on these laboratory results, iron concentrations in recharge water for MAR should be <0.3 mg/L to mitigate clogging effects. Furthermore, using noncorrodible materials for bore screen and pumps, and avoiding external oxidant inputs should be considered to prevent iron related chemical and biological clogging.

The beneficial effect of fertigation with acidic fertilizers to protect emitters from chemical and biological clogging might be inhibited by improper fertigation modes. An on-site drip irrigation experiment was conducted to investigate the injection strategies of phosphorus (P)-coupled nitrogen (N) fertigation and water salinity on clogging of emitters with plain channel and labyrinth structures. The results demonstrated that the H + in acidic P fertilizer solutions inhibited the precipitation of carbonate and phosphate simultaneously. However, a weak acidic P fertilizer could no longer protect the emitters from clogging effectively under saline water with an electrical conductivity (EC) exceeding 2 dS m À1 because the phosphate sediments accounted for more than 80% of the total clogging substances. A strategy of applying a weak acidic phosphate fertilizer following N fertigation performs better in reducing emitter clogging than fertigation using N and phosphate fertilizers together. The target pH values were obtained as 6.0, 4.0, and 3.0 for protecting emitters from clogging for drip irrigation systems applying irrigation water with an EC of 0.5, 2.0, and 4.0 dS m À1 , respectively. An optimal fertigation mode for emitter clogging control should consider water quality, type and pH value of fertilizer, and emitter type comprehensively.
