Eggshells as natural calcium carbonate source in combination with hyaluronan as beneficial additives for bone graft materials, an in vitro study

Abstract: IntroductionIn bone metabolism and the formation especially in bone substitution, calcium as basic module is of high importance. Different studies have shown that the use of eggshells as a bone substitute material is a promising and inexpensive alternative. In this in vitro study, the effects of eggshell granulate and calcium carbonate towards primary bovine osteoblasts were investigated. Hyaluronan (HA) was used as artificial extracellular matrix (ECM) for the used cells to facilitate proliferation and differ… Show more

“…Natural Ca sources are of interest because they contain not only Ca but also other elements (e.g., Sr and F), which may have a positive effect on bone metabolism (Olgun et al, 2015). Concentrations of other elements (Na, K, P) in eggshells are very low compared to the daily recommended allowance (Neunzehn et al, 2015). Studies have proven natural calcium supplement safety -eggshell powder has a smaller amount of V, Cr, Pb, Al, and Cd compared to oyster shells or purified CaCO3 (Schaafsma et al, 2000).…”

“…A vitro study, carried out by Neunzehn et al, (2015) exhibited the high capability of the blend of eggshell particles and hyaluronan as essential segments for bone recovery and tissue designing. These results were in accordance with Krithiga andSastry, (2011) andBee, (2011) who reported that the utilization of chicken eggshell powder may be useful, it could expand bone thickness and diminish torment in patients with osteoporosis.…”

“…1,11) However, the complexity of crystal nucleation and growth of PCCs still leads to controversies in regards to the factors that affect the properties of PCCs. 12,13) Furthermore, several researches have reported on the synthesis of PCCs from cockle shell and its application on bone graft materials, 4) drug delivery, 14) and adsorption of heavy metal. 15) However, only a few researches have reported on the preparation of PCCs from eggshell.…”
