Eggshell and Bacterial Cellulose Composite Membrane as Absorbent Material in Active Packaging

Abstract: Bacterial cellulose and eggshell composite was successfully developed. Eggshell was mixed with bacterial cellulose suspension and it was casted as a composite film. CaCO 3 derived from eggshell was compared with its commercial availability. It can be noted that good dispersion of eggshell particle was prepared. Eggshell particle was irregular in shape with a variation in size. It existed in bacterial cellulose network. Characterization on composite was focused on thermal and mechanical properties. It showed th… Show more

“…The existing literature describes numerous BNC composites with potential use in this sector. A number of them are still at the preliminary testing stage and has not been examined as packaging for specific foodstuff, however the authors suggest their usage in packaging industry [ 105 , 106 , 107 ].…”

“…Different moisture absorbers are often used to control humidity and to remove excess of fluid from foodstuff. Bacterial nanocellulose membranes with eggshell particles were pre-tested in such an application, acting as absorbent material for water and vegetable oil [ 106 ]. Vilela et al [ 119 ] produced a BNC/poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) composite with moisture scavenging ability.…”

“…Egg shells being inexpensive and light weight, finds its application in load bearing materials like automotive industry and other structural applications [9]. Hence, various researchers explored the utilization of this waste chicken egg shell as a reinforcement in variety of composites so that the strength of the composites is improved and also it thus, finds the way for its disposal [10].…”
