Zygotic embryos of Picea chihuahuana MartõÂ nez were cultivated in vitro to determine the time of organogenic competence and to maximize adventitious bud induction. The induction medium consisted of modi®ed B5 substrate supplemented with N 6 -benzyladenine (with or without naphthalene acetic acid) or kinetin (with or without 2-4, dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) at dierent concentrations and induction times. The minimum induction time required for bud formation was 14 d with kinetin and 17 d with N 6 -benzyladenine. After induction embryos were transferred to the proliferation medium (modi®ed B5 substrate with 50 % of its components and without growth regulators) for 30 d. The subsequent buds were transferred every 15 d to Schenk and Hildebrandt medium at half its concentration without growth regulators. The most eective treatments were 3 and 5 mg l À1 kinetin or N 6 -benzyladenine which produced ®ve to seven buds per embryo. The largest shoots were subjected to rooting trials with pulses of dierent concentrations of indole butyric acid resulting in only one bud developing a root. Histological analysis revealed clusters of three to four cells that became more evident as induction time increased. Kinetin promoted the development of an organized structure prior to adventitious buds formation sooner than N 6 -benzyladenine. # 2000 Annals of Botany Company

Recognising which life-history factors can potentially explain the success of biological invasions is essential to understand why certain exotic species are more successful to invade a given system than others, and also to better predict invasion outcomes. We focused on the three most planted pine tree species in Southern Brazil -Pinus elliottii, P. caribaea and P. oocarpaas a natural system to test the hypothesis that some key vital attributesfecundity (number of seeds produced), seed viability, germinability, seedling growth vigour (biomass and stem length)could be driving the greater invasion of P. elliottii in the region. We collected seeds of P. elliottii var. elliottii, P. caribaea subsp. hondurensis and P. oocarpa in two sites of similar climate and soil in the Cerrado biodiversity hotspot. Seeds were tested for viability and germinability, and seed production was estimated. Under laboratory conditions, we evaluated seedling survival, stem and root development, biomass production and mortality for each species. Although P. elliottii is regarded as the most successful invasive pine species in the Cerrado, it did not outperform the other pines in terms of seed viability, germinability and seedling survival, and it had the slowest growth. P. elliottii did produce, however, at least twice as many seeds as the other species. P. caribaea revealed high seed viability and seedling survival, the fastest seedling development, but low seed production. P. oocarpa showed the lowest seed viability, but fast root growth and very low seedling mortality. Our results suggest seed production is a key factor for P. elliottii invasion success. However, given the strong performance of P. caribaea and P. oocarpa for germinability and growth, we emphasise the risk of both species also becoming successful invaders in the Cerrado. We highlight the need for constant monitoring of emerging pine individuals in native ecosystems to avoid future invasions.

Pinus oocarpa is the most important conifer for resin production in Mexico, so superior resin trees were selected in the Southern Mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. The objective was to determine the variation and differences among provenances and among trees according to the parameters of seedling emergence and the number of cotyledons, and their relationship with elevation and climatic variables. The seedling emergence of four replicates of 20 seeds from 80 trees was counted daily. For the emergence parameters, provenance contributed 42.02% to the total variance, tree 29.19% and error 28.79%. Only tree (11.71%) and error (88.29%) contributed to the total variance of the cotyledon number. The effect of provenance (p ≤ 0.0006) and tree (p ≤ 0.0001) was significant for all variables evaluated. Higher-elevation provenances and trees had higher emergence values. The emergence parameters were positively associated with tree elevation. Climatic variables related to precipitation and temperature were negatively related to the emergence parameters. The results allow for the selection of phenotypes without emergence problems to establish seed orchards.
