Fipronil, active ingredient of the acaricide Frontiline®, is a phenyl-pyrazolic derivative, and its efficacy in the elimination of several plagues, even in low concentrations, has already been demonstrated; however, its effect on nontarget organisms has not been thoroughly explained. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different dosages of fipronil on the liver of mice in artificial conditions. Results showed that the animals exposed to fipronil present significant ultrastrucutural changes in hepatic cells with evident cellular and cytoplasm disorganization in hepatocytes characterized by an increase in the number of organelles, mainly mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum, organelles that, in the case of the exposed animals, were probably responsible for the enzymes' synthesis that have the function of inactivating the toxic metabolites. A fat accumulation in the hepatocytes' cytoplasm (steatosis) was observed, in addition to extended vacuolated areas, mainly in regions next to the cell nucleus. Alterations observed in the nuclei of the hepatocytes pointed out cell death processes. Moreover, Kupffer cells increased in number (hyperplasia) suggesting an increase in the phagocytic activity of the liver in the exposed animals.

Os cupins são insetos sociais da ordem Isoptera, com cerca de 2.900 espécies catalogadas no mundo. No Brasil, são várias as espécies de importância agrícola e florestal. Caracterizam-se por colônias complexas do ponto de vista social e estrutural, muitas vezes subterrâneas, o que dificulta o seu completo conhecimento. Diante deste fato, este trabalho teve como objetivo a manutenção de colônias de cupins com importância agrícola em laboratório, do gênero Nasutitermes, para determinar as condições necessárias ao seu desenvolvimento, incluindo preferências de forrageamento por diferentes partes de Paspalum notatum. Colônias jovens foram coletadas em campo para manutenção em laboratório, sob um sistema artificial com condições estruturais (abrigo) e ambientais (luz, temperatura, umidade relativa do ar) que buscaram ser as mais similares possíveis àquelas naturais. Diferentes partes de P. notatum foram oferecidos como opção alimentar, em teste com chance de escolha. Após estabelecimento da criação laboratorial e observação do forrageamento de colônias do cupim Nasutitermes sp, verificou-se a preferência por raiz, seguida de fragmentos em decomposição, folhas secas e frescas, equivalentemente. Verificou-se também sua adaptação à um sistema estrutural artificial composto por caixa central e caixa de alimentação, permitindo a manutenção das colônias por tempo mínimo de 5 meses. FORAGING AND MAINTENANCE OF Nasutitermes sp COLONIES (ISOPTERA: Termitidae) IN LABORATORY ABSTRACTTermites are social insects of Isoptera order, with about 2,900 species cataloged in the world. In Brazil, there are several species of agricultural and forestry importance. They are characterized by complex colonies from the social and structural point of view, often subterranean, which hinders their complete knowledge. In view of this fact, this work had as objective the breeding of termite colonies with agricultural importance in the laboratory, of the genus Nasutitermes, to determine the necessary conditions for its development, including foraging preferences for different parts of Paspalum notatum. Young colonies were collected in field and kept in laboratory, in an artificial system with structural conditions (shelter) and environmental conditions (light, temperature, relative humidity) that sought to be the most similar to those natural ones. Different parts of P. notatum were offered as food option, in a test with a chance of choice. After establishing of laboratory rearing and observing the foraging of Nasutitermes spp. colonies, it was verified the preference of foraging by root, followed by decaying fragments, dry and fresh leaves, equivalently. It was also verified its adaptation to an artificial structural system composed of central box and feeding box, allowing the maintenance of the colonies for a minimum period of 5 months.

Efficiency of Liquid and Granular Formulations of Insecticides for Mound-building Termites Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera: Termitidae) ABSTRACT-The importance of testing molecules, as a strategy to chemical control, concerns the use of a selective product with high efficiency against the pests combined with the residual power; and this product should be environmentally, economically and operationally viable. The objective of this research was to study the chemical control of mound-building termites Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera: Termitidae). The study was conducted in pasture, at the Estância Nelore located at km 236 of highway BR-163 in the municipality of Caarapó, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, during the period from November 6 th to December 6 th , 2007. Four active ingredients (A.I.) were evaluated: imidacloprid, fipronil, deltamethrin and chlorpyriphos, at the dosages of 0.60 g, 0.20 g, 1.0 g and 1.2 g, respectively, applied per termite monticule. A completely randomized design with five treatments and ten replications was adopted. The treatments were represented by the control group and the four A.I.'s. Each replication consisted of one active termite mound about 50 cm in height. The chosen termite mounds were identified with lime based paint. To calculate the efficiency of A.I.s tested, the Abbott formula was used. Means were compared by multiple comparison test U of Mann-Whitney with significance level of 5%. The results demonstrated the high potential of chlorpyriphos in controlling C. cumulans.
