Contamination of food supplies by fallout Sr-90 in the biosphere is viewed as a current problem of serious magnitude. The basis for concern, involving the unique parallel in behavior of calcium and strontium in biological material, has been covered in excellent reports by Russell (16,17), Coniar et at.(4), Kornberg (10) and others. It is sufficient here to note only that Sr-90 enters the human food chain directly or indirectly via plant material. Consequently, effort has been expended to reduce the human burden of this isotope by reducing its relative content in the plant cation pool. Methods such as dilution with stable strontium or calcium (7,14,19) have shown only limited promise in this respect. The problem of restricting uptake of Sr-90 in plants under commercial conditions remains as an unsolved challenge to the researcher.Evidence in this report indicates that roots of intact plants discriminated against passage of strontium to the plant top. Such discrimination was conditioned by water flow through the plant. Possible reasons for this phenomenon are discussed. MethodsTest plants were Phaseolus vulgaris L., variety Red Wade. Methods of culture were similar to those descrihed in detait elsewhere (5). Plants were grown under controlled nutrient (hydroponic) and environment regimes to yield rapidly growing subjects which were adequately supplied with all essential elements, and which were highly uniform. Solution concentration of stahte calcium was 3.0 ma/1 and strontium 1.0 ppm. Growth period from seed to test conclusion was 13 days.Water utility of intact ptants was attered hy addition of appropriate amounts of polyethytene gtycol (PEG), molecular weight 6000, to the nutrient solution four days prior to test conclusion. PEG was reported as a highly satisfactory osmotic Physiol. Plant., 17, 1964 [746]

Verschiedentlich wurde festgestellt, dai3 lebende Pflanzenwurzeln NEhr-Ionen an das Aui3enmedium abscheiden (2, 3, 6, 8, 11, 12). Nach Hoagland und Bvoyer (5) geben Gerstenwurzeln an aqua dest. geringe Mengen an K+ ab. Helder (4) berichtet, dai3 junge Gerstenwprzeln Rb+ an das Auflenmedium abgeben. In Abwesenheit von Ca++ in der Nahrlosung war dieser Rb-Efflux besonders hoch. Bei den genannten Untersuchungen iiber den Kationen-Efflux ist no& ungeklart, ob diese Kationen aus dem Freien Raum stammen oder aus dem Zellinnern kommen. Mit den nachstehend beschriebenen Versuchen sollte daher festgestellt werden, ob auch dann ein nennenswerter K-Efflux vorliegt, wenn die im Freien Raum vorhandenen K-Ionen ausgewaschen und ausgetauscht wurden. Weiterhin wurde untersucht, von welchen Faktoren der Efflux abhangt und wie er zusammen mit dem Influx die Nettoaufnahme an Ii+ ergibt. V e r s u c h s t e c h n i k Die Untersuchungen wurden teils mit 4-6 Tage alten Gerstenwurzeln, teils mit 10 bis 14 Tage alten Gerstenpflanzen durchgefiihrt. Nach dem Keimen in feuchter Atmosphare wurde die Gerste auf einem Nylonnetz in einer 2 m-molaren CaS0,-Losung in einem kiinstlich belichteten, temperierten Raum angezogen. Bei Versuchen mit intakten Pflanzen wurde die Ca-Sulfatlosung nach 4-5 Tagen durch eine Nahrl6sung (1 m-molar KNO, 4-0,25 m-molar Ca[HJ?O,],) ersetzt. Auf diese Weise wurden gesunde Wurzeln herangezogen, die reichlich mit C a versorgt waren. Die Wurzeln wurden nach dem Abschneiden mit aqua dest. gewaschen und zu Proben von je 1 g Frischgewicht abgewogen. Eine Versuchsreihe enthielt jeweils 4 solcher Proben, so daB allle in den folgenden Tabellen und Abbildungen aufgefiihrten Werte, falls nicht anders angegeben, Miittelwerte von 4 Einzelwerten sind. Diese Wurzelproben nahmen K+ aus einer 1 m-molaren KNO, f 0,25 m-molaren Ca (H,PO,),-Losung auf (1 Probei25 ml Aufnahrnelosung). K+ der Aufnahrnelosung war bei den meisten Versuchen mit 42K markiert. Die Aufnahmedauer war je nach Versuchsfrage unterschiedlich. Nach der Aufnahme wurden die Wurzeln mit aqua dest. auf einer Absaugnutsche grundlich gewaschen (3 min), mit haii3em Adlkohol abgetiitet und nach dem Abdampfen des Alkohols wurde K mit 1 n-HCI aus den Wurzeln extrahiert. Im Extrakt wurde das mit 42K markierte K (nachfdgend als markiertes K bezeichnet) mit dem Fliissigkeitszahlrohr, das gesamte K (= Gesamt-K) wurde nach dem Abklingen der Aktivitat flammenspektrometrisch bestimmt.
