Efficient Support of XQuery Update Facility in XML Enabled RDBMS

Abstract: XQuery Update Facility (XQUF), which provides a declarative way of updating XML, has become recommendation by W3C. The SQL/XML standard, on the other hand, defines XMLType as a column data type in RDBMS environment and defines the standard SQL/XML operator, such as XMLQuery() to embed XQuery to query XMLType column in RDBMS. Based on this SQL/XML standard, XML enabled RDBMS becomes industrial strength platforms to host XML applications in a standard compliance way by providing XML store and query capability. “…Future work in SQL/JSON standard will allow JSON_QUERY() used as the right side expression of a SQL UPDATE statement to replace an existing JSON object with a new object by applying updating transformation expressions on the existing JSON object. This is conceptually the same as the XQuery Update Facility in SQL/XML that can update XML documents stored in an XML document collection [22]. All of these enhancements will be part of the process for the evolving SQL/JSON standard.…”

“…An important concept in CloudMdsQL is the notion of "table expression", inspired from XML table views [8,17], which is generally an expression that returns a table (i.e. a structure, compliant with the common data model).…”
