Stereoscopic video service is one of the most widely adopted technologies for 3-Dimensional technology. However, the stereoscopic video service has not been penetrated into the market since there does not exist a proper transmission method even though the conventional MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) has support for broadcast service of mono-scopic video contents. This is partly because the MPEG-2 TS does not support displaying a stereoscopic video content which consists of several composition types widely used in the market. This paper proposes the new MPEG-2 TS specification suitable for transmitting and displaying stereoscopic video contents. In order to show feasibility of the proposal, this paper describes an end-to-end system which is implemented with consideration of the method how to multiplex and de-multiplex stereoscopic video contents as well as keeping backward compatibility with the traditional MPEG-2 TS.

This paper proposes a conditional replenishment algorithm (CRA) to improve the visual quality (where spatial resolutions of the left and right views are mismatched) of a hybrid stereoscopic 3DTV that is based on the ATSC‐M/H standard. So as to generate an enhanced view, the CRA is to choose the better substitute among a disparity‐compensated view with high quality and a simply interpolated view. The CRA generates a disparity map that includes modes and disparity vectors as additional information. It also employs a quad‐tree structure with variable block size by considering the spatial correlation of disparity vectors. In addition, it takes advantage of the disparity map used in a previous frame to keep the amount of additional information as small as possible. The simulation results show that the proposed CRA can successfully improve the peak signal‐to‐noise ratio of a poor‐quality view and consequently have a positive effect on the subjective quality of the resulting 3D view.

Three-dimensional (3D) video service is expected to be introduced as a next-generation television service. Stereoscopic video is composed of two 2D video signals for the left and right views, and these 2D video signals are encoded. Video quality between the left and right views is not always consistent because, for example, each view is encoded at a different bit rate. As a result, the video quality difference between the left and right views degrades the quality of stereoscopic video. However, these characteristics have not been thoroughly studied or modeled. Therefore, it is necessary to better understand how the video quality difference affects stereoscopic video quality and to model the video quality characteristics. To do that, we conducted subjective quality assessments to derive subjective video quality characteristics. The characteristics showed that 3D video quality was affected by the difference in video quality between the left and right views, and that when the difference was small, 3D video quality correlated with the highest 2D video quality of the two views. We modeled these characteristics as a subjective quality metric using a training data set. Finally, we verified the performance of our proposed model by applying it to unknown data sets.
