The shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) hamper the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs). Toward overcoming these limitations, herein an in situ grown C2N@NbSe2 heterostructure is presented with remarkable specific surface area, as a Li–S catalyst and LiPS absorber. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results comprehensively demonstrate that C2N@NbSe2 is characterized by a suitable electronic structure and charge rearrangement that strongly accelerates the LiPS electrocatalytic conversion. In addition, heterostructured C2N@NbSe2 strongly interacts with LiPS species, confining them at the cathode. As a result, LSBs cathodes based on C2N@NbSe2/S exhibit a high initial capacity of 1545 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C. Even more excitingly, C2N@NbSe2/S cathodes are characterized by impressive cycling stability with only 0.012% capacity decay per cycle after 2000 cycles at 3 C. Even at a sulfur loading of 5.6 mg cm−2, a high areal capacity of 5.65 mAh cm−2 is delivered. These results demonstrate that C2N@NbSe2 heterostructures can act as multifunctional polysulfide mediators to chemically adsorb LiPS, accelerate Li‐ion diffusion, chemically catalyze LiPS conversion, and lower the energy barrier for Li2S precipitation/decomposition, realizing the “adsorption‐diffusion‐conversion” of polysulfides.

Lithium-sulfur (LiÀ S) batteries, possessing excellent theoretical capacities, low cost and nontoxicity, are one of the most promising energy storage battery systems. However, poor conductivity of elemental S and the "shuttle effect" of lithium polysulfides hinder the commercialization of LiÀ S batteries. These problems are closely related to the interface problems between the cathodes, separators/electrolytes and anodes. The review focuses on interface issues for advanced separators/electrolytes based on nanomaterials in LiÀ S batteries. In the liquid electrolyte systems, electrolytes/separators and electrodes system can be decorated by nano materials coating for separators and electrospinning nanofiber separators. And, interface of anodes and electrolytes/ separators can be modified by nano surface coating, nano composite metal lithium and lithium nano alloy, while the interface between cathodes and electrolytes/separators is designed by nano metal sulfide, nanocarbon-based and other nano materials. In all solid-state electrolyte systems, the focus is to increase the ionic conductivity of the solid electrolytes and reduce the resistance in the cathode/polymer electrolyte and Li/electrolyte interfaces through using nanomaterials. The basic mechanism of these interface problems and the corresponding electrochemical performance are discussed. Based on the most critical factors of the interfaces, we provide some insights on nanomaterials in high-performance liquid or state LiÀ S batteries in the future.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have become one of the most competitive candidates for next generation energy storage systems due to the high theoretical energy density, nevertheless, the severe shuttle effect, volume expansion, and poor electrical conductivity restrict their practical application. Herein, we report a synergistic combination of 3D carbon matrix (CdS@NG-CNT) composed of low-defect carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) decorated with low loading of cadmium sulfide quantum dots as sulfur host and carbon black (CB) as separator layer to collectively solve these issues. Specifically, the developed host material possesses abundant macropores and mesopores and high electrical conductivity, which endow the carbon matrix multifaceted structural properties for polysulfides immobilization, electrons/ Li + transfer, and Li 2 S formation, as well as buffering the volume expansion during cycling. The CB-modified separator can help to enhance the interconversion of intercepted polysulfides. Benefiting from these aspects, the cell equipped with CdS@NG-CNT/S//CB-PP exhibits a superior rate capacity of 1493.6 mA h/g at 0.2 C (1 st ), and maintains a capacity of 479.7 mA h/g after 1050 cycles with an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.051 % at 1.0 C. This work provides a useful strategy to solve issues of the current LSBs, which may practically be used in the high-energy density.
