Efficient global maximum power point tracking technique for a partially shaded photovoltaic string

Abstract: Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is essential for a photovoltaic (PV) system in order to maximise the utilisation of solar energy. Under partially shaded conditions (PSC), PV strings with bypass diodes exhibit multiple peaks in the power-voltage (P-V) characteristics. Although various Global MPPT (GMPPT) algorithms have been proposed to address this issue, most of them cannot distinguish between PSC and uniform insolation, leading to the scan of the entire P-V curve under uniform insolation levels. This stu… Show more

“…PSO is a meta-heuristic optimisation algorithm to solve non-linear objective functions. It is mostly used soft computing technique to solve MPPT problems [15] because of its simplicity in implementation. The proposed ELAVPSO algorithm is derived from conventional PSO algorithm and its variants enhanced leader PSO (ELPSO) and AVPSO algorithms.…”

“…This parameter setting or tuning affects the convergence speed of PSO algorithm. In the case of PV MPPT, tracking speed depends on the convergence rate of PSO algorithm [13][14][15]. Hence, to get faster tracking of GMPP using PSO algorithm, parameter control pertaining to PSO algorithm is essential.…”

“…In the case of non-uniform illumination, more than one power peak will appear for the PV system. Thus, a complex MPPT is required for the system to search for global MPP's, like the systems in [13,14]. The circuit operation and design are the same as that with a single solar panel.…”

“…The impact of these frictions is neglected as the motor pump attains 10-20% of its rated speed. Therefore, the centrifugal pump is designed applying the pump affinity laws which possess a square torque-speed or a cubic power-speed characteristics as k 1 = P m ω 3 = 1300 (2π × 3000/60) 3 = 4.2 × 10 −5 W/(rad/s) 3 (16)…”

“…An increased capacity and compactness are the additional features of this motor. The growth of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system is reached its maturity [3,4]. This is indeed emerged as a sustainable energy.…”
