Efficiency of various measures of persistency of milk yield in Sahiwal cattle

Abstract: The first lactation production records of 351 Sahiwal cows maintained at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal over a period of 52 years (1961-2012) were used to estimate the persistency measures using different methods viz. Rao and Sundaresan method, 1982 (P1), PTOMAX2 (P2), PTOMAX3 (P3), PSD2 (P4), PSD3 (P5</s… Show more

“…Season is one of the key factors affecting persistency. The present results on significant effect of season of calving were in agreement with the outcomes of Rao and Sundaresan (1982), Solkner and Fuchs (1987), Kumar and Singh (2004;, Kaushal et al (2016) in different breeds of cattle. According to Ratio method rainy calvers had more persistency than other seasonal calvers.…”

“…The present findings of significance of period of calving in Tharparkar cattle were in support with that of Tekerli et al (2000), Rekik et al (2003), Kumar and Singh (2004; and Fadlelmoula et al (2007) in different crossbred and exotic cattle and Kaushal et al (2016) in Sahiwal cattle. No regular trend in different measures of persistency was observed over different periods.…”

“…Wood's gamma function (Wood, 1968) is one of the examples of Mathematical lactation curve model. Among these, the estimation of persistency derived from ratio method is considered to be most effective as compared to other methods (Kaushal et al, 2016) . The objective of this study was firstly to estimate the effect of days in milk (DIM), peak milk yield (PMY), dry period (DP), calving interval (CI), parity and season of calving on 305-day milk yield (305-DMY).…”
