Previous studies suggest that nitrogen (N) loads from acid sulphate soil (AS soil) catchments in Finland are higher than those from other agricultural catchments. This study seeks to explain this difference by measuring carbon (C) and N profiles in both an AS soil and a neighbouring non AS soil. In Lapua, western Finland, two adjacent fields (Dystric Cambisols), subjected to similar agricultural practices, were analysed to the depth of 240 cm for pH, total C (Ctot), total N (Ntot), NH4 +-N, NO3 --N, sulphur and bulk density. Field A, an AS soil, contained sulfidic materials and 0.9% Ctot below 170 cm, while Field B, not an AS soil, had 0.3% Ctot in the subsoil and no sulfides. In these soils, the groundwater level declined below 200 cm in summer, subjecting the subsoil to oxidation. This study revealed large stocks of Ctot, Ntot, and mineral N in the subsoil, particularly in the AS soil. At 20240 cm, Field A contained 292 tons of Ctot ha-1 and 25 tons of Ntot ha-1, while Field B had 152 tons of Ctot ha-1 and 11 tons of Ntot ha-1. Field A contained up to 435 kg of mineral N ha-1 in autumn, while in Field B there was only up to 137 kg of mineral N ha-1. In Field A, NH4 +-N dominated strongly, while NO3 --N dominated in Field B. It is suggested that the greater concentration of mineral N in the AS soil is due to 1) a greater stock of total (mineralizable) N and 2) the slower rate of nitrification resulting in substantial NH4 +-N retention on cation exchange sites.;

Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar a produção de mini-tubérculos de batata semente básica em função da dose e do parcelamento do nitrogênio (N) aplicado ao substrato. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por quatro doses de N (0, 115, 230, 460 mg L-1 de substrato) e por cinco modos de parcelamento das doses (M): M1 [10% no plantio + 90% aos 21 dias após a emergência (DAE)]; M2 [10% no plantio + 3% diariamente (21 a 51 DAE)]; M3 [50% no plantio + 50% aos 21 DAE]; M4 [50% no plantio + 1,6% diariamente (21 a 51 DAE)]; M5 (100% no plantio). O experimento foi instalado no delineamento em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 4x5 (doses x modos), com três repetições, na Universidade Federal de Viçosa. As cultivares plantadas foram Atlantic e Opaline, utilizando-se mini-tubérculos da categoria básica. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 3 L, contendo substrato comercial. Aos 25, 35 e 56 DAE foram avaliados o teor (TN) e quantidade de N na folha (QNA). Na colheita, aos 86 DAE, foram avaliados número e massas fresca e seca de tubérculos. Em ambas as cultivares, na fase inicial de crescimento da planta, nenhuma combinação de tratamentos (dose e modo) influenciou TN. Nas avaliações posteriores, TN aumentou com aumento da dose de N. Nas duas cultivares, QNA não foi afetado pela aplicação diluída das doses de N. Nenhuma combinação de dose e modo de aplicação do fertilizante nitrogenado influenciou o número de tubérculos. Quando houve efeito de dose de N sobre a massa de tubérculos, a dose zero proporcionou o maior valor da massa. A aplicação concentrada de N no momento da tuberização é prejudicial para a planta, pois reduz a massa seca e fresca de tubérculos.

) applied either at planting according to normal grower practice, or at hilling, the latest time that granular fertilizer can practically be applied. Whole-plant dry matter and N accumulation were determined at topkill. Soil inorganic N content was measured to 30-cm depth at planting and at tuber harvest. Soil N supply (plant N accumulation plus soil inorganic N content at harvest with no fertilizer N applied) varied from 77 to 146 kg N ha -1 depending on the year. Crop N supply (soil N supply plus fertilizer N applied) was a better predictor of plant N accumulation than fertilizer N rate, and was used to remove the confounding effect of variation in soil N supply when making among-year comparisons for N use efficiency characteristics. Nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE; plant N accumulation/crop N supply) decreased with increasing rates of N applied at hilling N rate in 1999, which was a dry year, but was not influenced by at-hilling N rate in 2000 and 2001, or by at-planting N rate in any year. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE; dry matter accumulation/crop N supply) and N utilization efficiency (NUtE; dry matter accumulation/plant N accumulation) decreased curvilinearly with increasing crop N supply in each year. Similar relationships between NUE and crop N supply, and between NUtE and plant N accumulation, among the 3 yr of the study suggest that these relationships are largely independent of seasonal climatic variation, and are primarily genetically controlled. Timing of N fertilization had no effect on any N use efficiency parameter, with the exception of reduced NUpE associated with split N application in 1999. This suggests that under rain-fed potato production in Atlantic Canada, timing of N fertilization has no significant effect on N use efficiency of Russet Burbank potato in years of adequate soil moisture, but NUpE may be decreased by split application of N in dry years.
