Efficiency of Electron Transfer Initiated Chemiluminescence

Abstract: Although the mechanisms of many chemiluminescence (CL) reactions have been intensively studied, no general model has been suggested to rationalize the efficiency of these transformations. To contribute to this task, we report here quantum yields for some well-characterized CL reactions, concentrating on recent reports of efficient transformations. Initially, a short review on the most important general CL mechanisms is given, including unimolecular peroxide decomposition, electrogenerated CL, as well as the in… Show more

“…Due to its high sensitivity and low background, chemiluminescence has been applied for analyte detection in vitro [36], in cells [37], and in vivo [38]. The chemiluminescent peroxyoxalate system is highly efficient at generating chemiluminescent emission and consists of an activated bis-oxalate ester, acyl transfer catalyst such as imidazole, and a fluorescent dye (Scheme 1) [39]. It proceeds via chemical reaction between H 2 O 2 and an activated oxalate to form the high-energy molecule 1,2-dioxetanedione.…”

“…Interaction between fluorescent dye and high-energy intermediate formed from the reaction of guanine and TMPG is similar to that between fluorescent dye and high-energy intermediate from peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence reaction (Augusto et al, 2013;Lee et al, 2003;Maruyama et al, 2013;Park et al, 2011) even though the former is generated by the intra-CRET (Cho et al, 2014), whereas the latter is observed by the inter-CRET.…”

“…7 Cell permeability, chemiluminescent quantum yield (CL) and commercial availability of 5'-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione (aka luminol, CL = 0.25 -2.4% dependent upon oxidant and pH) 8 has led to this system being the most widely studied for in vivo detection of ROS such as superoxide (O2 •-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (HO • ). In fact, systemic delivery of luminol has recently been demonstrated as an effective means of distinguishing between acute and chronic inflammation in vivo in combination with lucigenin.…”
