Efficiency in Second Language Vocabulary Learning

Abstract: An ongoing question in second language vocabulary learning is how to optimize the acquisition of words. One approach is the so‐called “spaced repetition technique” that uses intervals to repeat words in a given time frame (Balota et al., ; Leitner, ; Oxford, ; Pimsleur, ; Roediger & Karpicke, ; Schuetze & Weimer‐Stuckmann, 2011). Part of the discussion is on the number of words that can be acquired. Interestingly, within this context a question that has not been explored yet is: Is it more beneficial to increa… Show more

“…We revealed that some scientific papers dedicated to the study of foreign language for special purposes (LSP) teaching methods provide descriptions of their main characteristics and proved their effectiveness from the authors' subjective point of view [2,3]. Many articles on the problem of LSP teaching methods' effectiveness highlight only one of the methods, such as the interval repetition method "spaced repetition technique" [4][5][6] or individual information and communication technologies (ICT) techniques [7][8][9][10]. We suppose that a good theoretical study of a scientific problem does not always mean its highly effective implementation in practice.…”

“…Raiche ( 2011) proposed waiting at least 24 hours or ideally a few days to test long-term retention but only a proportion of research into second language vocabulary learning administered multiple post-tests. Barcroft (2007) conducted two post-tests, two days later and one week later to check if the effect was maintained over time, and in a related study by Schuetze (2017), three retention tests were carried out: one day after the last practice, four weeks after the last practice, and eight weeks after the last practice. This kind of tracking is also supported by language instructors (Oxford, 1990).…”

“…I especially liked Duolingo because it uses spaced repetition (Settles & Meeder, 2016), where content is shown less frequently if it is answered correctly and more frequently if it is answered incorrectly. This leads to better retention (Mondria & Mondria-De Vries, 1994;Pimsleur, 1967;Roediger & Butler, 2011;Schuetze, 2017;Seibert Hanson & Brown, 2020). With its colorful display and game-like play, such as leveling up, and getting coins to 'buy' things (Duolingo, 2020), I…”
